It’s from Canada pc btw, feels very predatory and I want input from people who might know better, my bank has been charged already and the order was confirmed but now they sent this.

I’m in Canada btw, if this isn’t the right subreddit please point me to a better one for this situation

I mean they’re giving you the option to cancel it, they’ll just refund the money. Be kinda stupid of them to ship it and then if you cancel for them to also have to cover the return shipping.

  2. I don’t know much about Canadian laws but if it were in France (my country), I would ask them to send it anyway and the difference in price is on them, and they probably wouldn’t ask for it anyway…

  3. From what I can tell, it’s not illegal in Canada, so long as they say the shipping fee is only an estimate at the point of order, but most retailers disavow the practise as it’s very, very scammy.

I would cancel. Some experiences online appear to be that this is more of a shakedown, and if you reply to cancel, they’ll “somehow” find that the $8.99 can be honoured.

It’s uncool but as long as they didn’t withdraw the funds without approval it doesn’t seem like it would be illegal. Depending what the item was I light personally cancel and order from somewhere else for the inconvenience though.

I’d just ignore the email entirely. Asking for money via email is not a good business practice.

Canada is a massive country and if the company doesn’t have many distribution centers this is probably a concern for them. I guess it depends how much the product costs, cos if this is like a $2k PC you got a great deal on, yeah it makes sense to fork over an extra $18. But unless you think you’ll get the product cheaper from somewhere else, it makes sense to just pay them. They’re not forcing you, they’ll let you cancel at no charge, they’re being about as transparent as they can be.

Imagine ordering a 1800 dollar computer and cancelling over 20 bucks

It says that it’s an adjustment to the shipping *estimate* that was provided. There’s nothing predatory about it, although usually a shipping estimate is calculated more accurately than that based on your address. If you don’t want to pay it then don’t pay it and take your business elsewhere.

Yeah probably is I live in Canada and have had this happen a few times for different reasons I would contact their support to verify before paying or to cancel the order

First time was buying ram from crucial I had the pay Purolator $20 to pick it up

Second was after buy some displate posters dhl emailed me saying there was a $50 import fee

Third was 2 weeks ago from PartsEngine Canada I got a email like this saying that shipping would another $20

But I live in a rural area so it does cost a bit more to ship things here

They did the same to me, cuz Newfoundland. Still got the shinies.

blacklist them, this is shitty practices and the company doesn’t deserve your money.

I see this as more of a poorly run company and computer system than scam. If I had to deal with returns or warranty I’d be a little nervous. Unless I was getting a great deal or it was only available through them I’d likely cancel, but not because it’s a scam.

Are you sure it’s a full charge or just a pre-authorization? Crappy anyway. They should have known by your postal code that shipping would be more.

Pretty common. They are giving you the option to cancel it and get a full refund. If you lived in quebec, you’d probably have a better chance to get them to cover the upcharge due to quebecs better consumer protection laws.

However, even if it where against the law, how much of your time is it worth to save 20$? I would reach out to them on the phone and ask them to ship it at their cost. If they say no, cancel your order and leave a 1 star review. I really don’t see a point in taking it further, like taking them to small claims court over 20$.

  15. Is 20 bucks really a big deal for them? Like wtf I sell shit on ebay and even I don’t complain when shipping costs a few dollars more than i was anticipating. They should just price it a bit higher and offer free shipping unless it’s something ridiculous like a hundred dollars just to ship.

  16. Recipe-Jaded

no, they’re asking for your approval. If you don’t approve, then cancel it

    is it annoying? yes.

    illegal? no.

I thought this was crazy until I saw you were from Canada and remember my friend who was also from Canada had a similar thing happen to him

  18. sofakingwetoddted

this reminds me of the forced tipping in the US, like even for carry out orders charging an extra 20%.

  19. po3smith

Cancel the order if they care about your business they’ll ship you the product for what you were originally agreed to pay for the begin with. If they don’t they don’t deserve your business anyway for a company to clearly mess up their shipping math to the point where you were literally already paid is on them not you. I’m tired of business is messing up in a little ways that to that means absolutely nothing or more money but you asked the consumer is a big hassle. People just like in the medical field you have to advocate for yourself or you won’t get anywhere!

Looks a little “bait and switchy” to me

  21. Shadowmant

Makes you wonder if it’s a scam email. If you paid by credit card then they would need to recollect the security code from you to re-bill it… and doing that over insecure email is not recommended.

  22. Explosive-Space-Mod

Call the store to make sure it’s legit and not a scam. Scammers are getting pretty good lately

  23. NorthenLeigonare

As some have already said, don’t pay them more and either cancel and go somewhere else (if possible), or just don’t pay them more.

No reputable company should be asking more than what was initially paid for at checkout. None. It makes no sense, and honestly, from a work point of view, it seems like a scam as much as of a shakedown. Don’t let them take a penny more.
