It is heavily implied in WAW that Richtofen is part of the Illuminati, with some messages written in Illuminati cipher in Der Riese telling him to kill Maxis. The Illuminati may have wanted him to take Group 935’s research for themselves, and keeping the Nazi party from being involved may help in covering their tracks.
