My friends & I have been burnt out of MP games for a good while now & since MWIII is bringing a new rendition of zombies, we decided to say “fuck it, lets replay all the BOIII, BO4 (yes, even Classified) & BOCW EE’s before the next title comes out.” I want to review each map w/ some screencaps along the way for me to preserve this run for personal reasons I’m not sure of yet. Hope the images look nice, I’m no expert in photography & some of the shots would have worked better in a video format, especially since I formatted some images in a 21:9 ratio (to note, 21:9 ratio is meant to show more focused action shots, while 16:9 shots are meant to show environments or because the framing of the shot could have fit a 21:9 ratio, I will not be consistent on this.)
Starting off w/ Shadows of Evil, I avoided this map back at launch since my 14 y/o brain in 2015 didn’t enjoy the “complex” route zombies started to take & I stuck with the Giant until Der Eisen launched. After years of not playing this map, the euphoric feeling of playing this map again screamed to a now 21 y/o me for why I loved Zombies. The art, writing, gameplay innovations, depth, enemy designs, EE steps & amazing lighting kept a smile on my face through most of the playthrough.
I wanted the caps on screen to highlight how much I loved the warmer color palette & noir aesthetic while Blundell began to adopt a more HP lovecraft inspired design for the enemies. During Blundell & Houston’s time in BOII, BOIII & BO4, they had a heavy look into personal introspection, atoning for your sins, fighting the great war against yourself. While I believe Ancient Evil is Blundell’s opus for gameplay, Shadows & Mob felt like his opus for storytelling, each playthrough gave so much more to learn about each character through the visual & auditory storytelling.
The Set up was not that bad & shows my 14 y/o brain should’ve learned to be more patient with this map. The Easter Egg was not that hard, the steps honestly were easy to remember after watching one video & with the coordination my friends & I had, it was a breeze outside of me killing the last zombies from the sword upgrade rounds a couple of times.
Overall, I love SoE, it’s a near perfect experience that set zombies up for the rest of BOIII, I love this map & hope COD 2024’s launch map brings this type of experience again. The only issue was the fucking meatballs. 9/10
