From a firearms perspective, the scope has to be clear of the ejection port. When you firea self-loading rifle it spits the empty brass casing (usually to the right, because most people are right-handed). Which is why coincidental scopes hanging off the left are the norm in this type of WWII/Cold War firearms, and at a certain point the windage doesn’t mean as much. When you think about it, the scope is just zero’d to a certain place to hit at a certain distance even if it’s mounted centerline to the bore. Because of the parabolic arc of the bullet, the sight is technically tilted lower than the barrel of the gun.
Just look up the bren gun with the top mount magazine, or how the Soviets did the sidemount on the AK.
