I had this random thought come to mind when thinking about replaying Outer worlds. How many of you would consider this game to be in the Cyberpunk genre? And, why or why not? Fits all the tropes and narrative points as well as aesthetic.
Anyone can genericize “cyberpunk” to apply to most works of sci-fi.
But no, it isn’t explicitly cyberpunk.

Its definitely in the broader Retrofuturism genre. There are a lot of subgenres from there of which cyberpunk is one. I would say it would fit Atompunk better.

It could be considered cyberpunk on the broad definition. You have the oppression, you have the advanced tech but people are still farming and there’s a lot of nature in the game, which sort of contradicts the cyberpunk motif
I would consider it just a Space sci-fi, but if you wanted to try and define it to a sub genre, I think it fits more into BioPunk

It’s more space opera than cyberpunk. Excellent game nonetheless ! Can’t wait for the #2

On the YouTube channel How to Drink the host makes the david Martinez drink from Cyberpunk 2077 and after making the drink goes into a deep dive on what cyberpunk is and where it comes from. It’s very informative and basically boils down to cyberpunk really is about what is intelligence if computers can be made to recreate it and corporations could potentially own your memory or personality. I can’t figure out how to link the video but it’s a great watch and a great channel.

Nah, it’s a campy sci-fi western.

This is actually called Astropunk, pretty much. Slick ‘phaser guns’ and the Jetsons and all that.
FeelTheCoze
No, and this game was far too fetch quest-y.
MechShield
The way the corporations are, and the fact a lot of people’s life seems to fuckin suck even though its scifi? Definitely feels cyberpunk.
However, I do think Cyberpunk requires a bit of a style direction that the game’s retrofuturism angle just doesn’t really meet.
So I wouldnt put it under a list of cyberpunk IPs, but id Definitely say it has cyberpunk elements.

Just pulp science fiction. Maybe you could call it Raygun Gothic.
It’s not atom punk because it doesn’t revolve around the impact of atomic energy. It’s not cyberpunk because it doesn’t revolve around the impact of AI. It’s
