In the original story there were no good guys. Richtofen was just straight up evil, and Maxis was beyond reason, completely taken over by his desire for revenge at all costs (including destroying the Earth if that’s what it came to). Basically when Richtofen got control of the Zombies away from Samantha on the Moon base, this was Maxis’ rebuttal. “Oh you now have absolute control? Good luck ruling over a dead rock.” kind of rebuttal. The story was never written to have a happy ending.
In the reboot with the new writers starting in Origins they were all rewritten to be somewhat “good” people.
