It seems a lot of people have suddenly become aware of “AI” in the past few months due to AI Image generators and ChatGPT – but people who were working in the field were already thinking through these things.
There are a lot of ethical and legal issues surrounding the use of AI, but these sorts of posts and arguments don’t help resolve them. Beyond that there is a reasonable suspicion that if mega-corporations are the only ones that have access to these technologies, the people will not benefit.
Additionally, I wonder why when I make comments critical of the Anti-AI movement, I am instantly downvoted… now THAT is cyberpunk AF.

The main problem is that AI is (and some want it to be) used as a human labor skip, and for consumers a cheaper product/service, when it should be used to extend human capabilities.
By example, I fear a huge company reducing personnel to make the same product but cheaper, instead of making a greater product with the same amount of human labor that was held before.
For the side of the consumers, they are aiming to get more and more for less and less.
Small artists are now the focus of the problem, people will stop hiring a small and inexperienced artist because an AI can do it “better”, Taxi drivers are just about to get replaced by AI self droved cars, (only they get mad about it) the difference here is, will you get mad when it comes for you? When you get to your 40s, 50s, 60s and all of a sudden your years of studying and experience will be replaced by an AI with 200 years of training made in a couple of months, cheaper and faster, no need to rest.
Art and entertainment were thought to be untouchable by AI and ironically, there are now a lot of content creators that are suddenly AIs, I just say an AI having a youtube channel with videos ranging from 150 to 4 million views, the just a couple of minutes ago, a reddit post accused of being a bot posting AI images, should we expect office jobs to be untouchable by AIs?
If you who are reading this, is your job untouchable by it? Should I care about your feelings if an AI does it better than you and cheaper?

I can’t speak about other industries, but automation in manufacturing is creating a huge job vacuum because there aren’t anywhere near enough skilled robotics workers to work alongside the robots. If you’re worried about robots taking your job, learn robotics. A typical robotics technician job only requires a two year degree equivalent and starts off at a good salary.

I always thought an AI assistant (/friend, I was a lonely kid) would be cool growing up. Hell, I’ve been having a lot of fun asking ChatGPT random world-building questions, even in the state it’s currently in it’s gotten pretty cool.
However, my younger self imagined it residing within a device that I owned, or a public good that I tapped into. Instead, as is the case with everything these days, even if perfected the technology will remain under the control of corporations who will be free to restrict or utilise it for the benefit of the wealthy.
My current definition of a dystopia is “your childhood dreams granted in the worst possible ways.”

I think AI is going to be a short term novelty, as it’s the novelty that attracts people into art in the first place, which is why you can see plenty of successful artists on social media simply because they draw pop culture in their work, it’s novelty, it doesn’t lead to deeper thought.
What I think will happen is that people using AI to make art will atrophy their skillset and lose out in the future when artists that stuck at their practice (because it is the practice itself which is the real value, not the final piece) are admired over those who sold their soul to the machine.
If it’s a stupid idea, and it works…. then it’s not a stupid idea.

I dont see how AI is to blame, if anything what is fucked isn’t the tech but the business model of certain companies and some people. AI is just another tool, it will never replace artists just like how one or two artists won’t replace the others, unless the machine were to blatantly rip someone’s style off, which is not what they do, artists will always have their place, and even if they were to rip artists off, some, i’d even say most, people would still like to have the authentic version of whoever’s style we’re talking about. Besides, given the context of the post, if you’re drawing for a hobby, even a monetized one, let it be, why do you care about this again?! How does that take from anybody’s pleasure of creating? People like to demonize the rise of AI in art as if it was going to take artists’ jobs when in reality it’s just another tool that is there to help artists and people who just want to play with it. Is photography bad because all a photographer needs to do is find a good angle and filters while the entire piece is already there as part of the landscape? I don’t think so. Is photography not art because of how little in the ways of creation one needs to do in order to get a good piece? I don’t think so. So why not judging AI likewise?!

This is wrong on many points. One that hasn’t been mentioned yet is that automation doesn’t mean everyone keeps the same job but works fewer hours. That’s communism. Automation means that some people work zero hours, some people work 40+ hours, and some people who control the automation reap all the benefits.

Like there are people making art more accessable and available via opensource project like StableDiffusion, and people trying to democratize text generation with projects like petals.ml and bloomAI, but most people just assume that big tech has control of this, and they can’t use it themselves or be a part of it.
