Insomniac Games
PlayStation and Insomniac Games’ “Marvel’s Wolverine” debuted as the best-selling game of September in the United States, according to analytics firm Circana.
Using the full game sales data of both physical and digital copies, the PlayStation 5 exclusive delivered the highest launch-month dollar sales for a Sony-published game since “Helldivers II” in early 2024.
That suggests it has beaten out the likes of “Stellar Blade,” “Ghost of Yotei,” “Death Stranding 2,” “Astro Bot,” “Marathon” and “Saros,” and the remasters/remakes of “Horizon: Zero Dawn,” “Days Gone” and “Until Dawn”.
It has also helped PlayStation 5 revenue increase by 43% compared to the same time a year ago, and (along with the pending release of GTA6) pushed Sony hardware sales to their highest levels since May 2025.
Globally, “Wolverine” was the second-best-selling PS5 game in September, behind only EA Sports FC 27. It did that while being only available for half of the month.
In good news for the industry overall, eight of the top ten best-selling games of September were new releases, while “NBA 2K27” has surpassed “Resident Evil: Requiem” to become the best-selling game of 2026 year-to-date in the United States. Both “NBA 2K27” and “Wolverine” have been the subjects of strong online backlash, albeit for different reasons.
“007 First Light,” “MLB: The Show 26,” and “Crimson Desert” take the third through fifth positions.
Total video game hardware unit sales fell 3% in September compared to a year ago – PlayStation 5 increased by 22% year-on-year, Switch 2 unit sales fell 14%, and Xbox Series sales fell 27%. Xbox console unit sales are now at an all-time low.
