Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 officially launches on October 23, 2026, but players don’t have to wait until then to experience its campaign. Activision has already unlocked all 16 missions for eligible digital preorders, and early reviews suggest Infinity Ward may have delivered one of the better Call of Duty campaigns in years.

However, there’s disappointing news for Xbox Game Pass subscribers. Unlike recent Call of Duty releases, Modern Warfare 4 won’t be available through the subscription service at launch. Players who don’t want to purchase the game separately will have to wait until holiday 2027.

With DMZ Early Access approaching and the first campaign reviews arriving, here’s what players can expect before the full release.

Modern Warfare 4 Release Date and Early Access Schedule

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 releases worldwide on Friday, October 23, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. This year’s installment also drops support for the PS4 and Xbox One.

Activision is providing two early-access periods ahead of launch. Campaign Early Access began October 16, allowing players who digitally preorder or prepurchase either the Standard or Vault Edition to play the complete single-player story. This applies to eligible purchases through Steam, Battle.net, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch 2.

DMZ Early Access follows on October 20, giving eligible digital preorder customers three days to explore the returning extraction shooter before the full game launches.

Both early-access periods are included with the $69.99 Standard Digital Edition. Players don’t need to spend $99.99 on the Vault Edition to participate.

Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Features 16 Missions

Infinity Ward’s latest campaign features 16 missions spanning the Korean Peninsula, New York, Paris, and Mumbai. The story continues the rebooted Modern Warfare storyline while introducing a new group of soldiers caught in a rapidly escalating conflict.

One storyline follows Private Park Hyun Jun, a young South Korean soldier fighting alongside his squad as North Korea launches a full-scale invasion. The other follows Captain John Price, now operating outside the military structure he once served, as he pursues the individual orchestrating the wider conflict.

Players can expect large-scale military assaults, close-quarters engagements, stealth operations, and more open-ended missions. Infinity Ward has also confirmed that completing campaign missions unlocks rewards, including operators and cosmetic items, that carry over to multiplayer and DMZ when the full game launches.

As for Modern Warfare 4’s campaign length, early playthroughs suggest roughly six hours for the main story, although difficulty, exploration, and optional objectives can extend that considerably. The 16-mission count doesn’t necessarily translate into 16 equally lengthy levels.

Modern Warfare 4’s Early Campaign Reviews Are Surprisingly Positive

The first Modern Warfare 4 campaign reviews arrived alongside the October 16 early-access launch, and the initial reception has been encouraging.

Critics have praised the game’s cinematic presentation, intense combat encounters, and varied mission design. Several have highlighted the South Korean storyline as a standout, particularly its large-scale battles and the more grounded perspective of soldiers confronting an overwhelming invasion.

Not every aspect has received the same enthusiasm. Some reviewers found Captain Price’s storyline less compelling, while others criticized restrictive mission design and occasional pacing issues. Still, the overall reception suggests a substantial improvement over the divisive 2023 Modern Warfare III campaign.

These are primarily campaign evaluations, however. Multiplayer and DMZ have not yet undergone extensive testing under normal public-server conditions, so the complete Modern Warfare 4 experience remains unproven.

Modern Warfare 4 Won’t Be on Xbox Game Pass Until 2027

Perhaps the biggest surprise ahead of launch is Activision’s decision to release Modern Warfare 4 as a standalone purchase rather than include it with Xbox Game Pass.

In an October 15 announcement, the publisher confirmed that Modern Warfare 4 will not arrive on Game Pass until holiday 2027, a significant departure from the day-one subscription availability of recent Black Ops releases.

Xbox and PC Game Pass subscribers who want to play at launch must therefore purchase the game separately.

The Standard Edition costs $69.99, while the $99.99 Vault Edition adds operator packs, exclusive weapon blueprints, one season of BlackCell, and additional DMZ bonuses.

Both editions include campaign and DMZ early access when purchased digitally before launch. For players primarily interested in the campaign or standard multiplayer, the Standard Edition provides access to the same core game without the extra cosmetic content.

Multiplayer, DMZ, and Zombies

Modern Warfare 4 launches with 12 new core 6v6 multiplayer maps, alongside larger battlegrounds featuring infantry and vehicle combat.

Infinity Ward is emphasizing more grounded gunplay, improved visibility, and greater weapon control. Players who participated in the August multiplayer beta have already had an opportunity to experience some of these changes.

DMZ also returns as one of the game’s three main modes. The extraction shooter takes players into the Hajin exclusion zone, where squads must complete objectives, fight hostile forces and rival operators, collect equipment, and successfully extract with their loot.

For players searching for Modern Warfare 4 Zombies, there’s an important clarification. Zombies is not among the game’s announced launch modes. Infinity Ward is focusing on Campaign, Multiplayer, and DMZ instead.

Modern Warfare 4 PC Requirements and Features

Activision has published the official Modern Warfare 4 PC specifications, including hardware targets for multiplayer and ray tracing.

For 90 FPS in multiplayer at High settings, the recommended specifications include a Ryzen 5 3600 or Core i7-8700K, 16GB of RAM, and an RTX 3060 Ti, RX 6600 XT, or Intel Arc B580.

Players targeting upscaled 4K with High-quality ray tracing will need considerably stronger hardware. Activision lists the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti and Radeon RX 9070 XT alongside 32GB of RAM for this configuration.

The PC version supports NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR Redstone, Intel XeSS 3, and ray tracing across Campaign, Multiplayer, and DMZ. It also includes a built-in benchmark tool for evaluating performance.

These figures are Activision’s published performance targets, not independently verified benchmark results.

All PC configurations require 115GB of SSD storage, while TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are mandatory. Additional storage may be needed for subsequent updates.

Is Modern Warfare 4 Worth Buying at Launch?

Modern Warfare 4’s campaign is off to a promising start, especially for players disappointed by recent Call of Duty single-player experiences. Its 16 missions, returning characters, and early critical reception give campaign-focused players a reason to be interested.

However, those primarily buying Call of Duty for multiplayer or DMZ may want to wait for reviews based on live public-server gameplay.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23, 2026, with DMZ Early Access beginning October 20. Players who preorder digitally can start the campaign immediately, but Game Pass subscribers face a much longer wait unless they’re willing to purchase the game.
