The Hope College men’s soccer team cruised to a 6-1 victory at La Roche College on Saturday in Pittsburgh, completing a 2,765-mile stretch of five consecutive road games over two weeks.
The Flying Dutch are now 7-1-1 on the season after going 4-1 over the challenging run.
“Great job by the guys performing the way they did today in the final game of this long road stretch,” head coach David Blahnik said. “We’ve learned a lot about our team the last two weeks and will be better because of it. The team has really come together on and off the pitch. As much as we have enjoyed traveling as a team and competing against some out-of-region teams we don’t normally play, we are excited to get back home.”
Hope’s next game is Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 6:30 p.m. against Lake Michigan College at Van Andel Soccer Stadium. It is the final test before MIAA play kicks off for the two-time defending MIAA champions.
Senior forward Seth Walters (St. Joseph, Michigan / St. Joseph) and junior forward Ryker Corstange (Richland, Michigan / Gull Lake) scored two goals apiece.
Wolters leads the Orange and Blue with nine goals this season. With 38 career goals, Wolters is now tied with Mark Van Voorst (1971-74) for fifth place in the Hope record book.
Hope jumped to a 3-0 halftime lead behind three goals in five minutes during the first 15 minutes, 46 seconds.
Walters struck in the 11th minute and was followed by senior defender Caden Chenlo (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) in the 14th minute and Corstange in the 16th minute.
Corstange opened the second-half scoring in the 52nd minute, extending his career-high total to six.
Walters earned his third multi-goal game of the season in the 61st minute and put the Flying Dutch ahead, 5-0.
La Roche (3-3-2) spoiled a shutout bid in the 62nd minute. Senior forward Micah Wieland (Bristol, Indiana / Northridge) delivered his fourth goal of the season in the 89th minute.
