The Americans are up next, after three German sleds.

It’s been a long road to Cortina for push athlete Josh Williamson, who has dealt with a litany of injuries over this quad, including a hip surgery, a knee surgery and a pelvic fracture. The former lacrosse star described the rehab from each of these injuries as “the lowest moments of my career.”

“I had created this identity for myself when I got into this sport,” Williamson said. “Everybody’s strong and fast, but I felt I was tough, and I felt I could handle this sport. This sport’s tough on the body and I can handle a beating, so I felt it made me a good fit for this.

“When I had those injuries it tested that identity. It kind of felt hollow. It’s hard to think that you might not be who you think you are.”

But in getting back to the bobsled starting line, and winning a push competition in Cortina to earn the spot on the 2-man sled, he’s proven he is, in fact, that tough.
