History
University of Minnesota Duluth women’s hockey goaltender Ève Gascon continued to make her case that she’s the best goaltender in the nation in the NCAA’s best league Saturday at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, Minn., making 33 saves en route to her second-straight 3-0 shutout over the University of St. Thomas. The shutout was the No. 10 Bulldogs third-consecutive game without allowing a goal and Gascon and Company’s ninth on the season. Gascon has had a shutout in over half — five — of UMD’s last eight games.
What ended up a truly defensive game on UMD’s annual Senior Day began with some early offense. UMD’s freshman class has been active in the scorebook lately, netting seven goals over the Bulldogs last six games, and Molly Cole stretched it to eight goals over seven games 5:09 into the first period after she backhanded her seventh goal of the season past UST’s goaltender Julia Minotti for the early 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs found themselves in the penalty box early in the second period, with two infractions in the first five minutes of action. After holding the Tommies without a shot on their first two power plays, UST managed to get five on goal during its third extra skater attempt, but again. But only did Gascon have 19 saves in the second frame alone and 24 through 40 minutes, the Bulldogs defense was blocking shots – UMD had blocked a whopping 16 in the first two periods.
All that defense finally equated to offense for the Bulldogs late in the second, when on a power play, Caitlin Kraemer dished off to Tova Henderson and Henderson found Josie St. Martin at the point for her fourth goal of the season and a 2-0 advantage at the 16:40 mark.
UMD rallied around Gascon from there, killing off a fourth penalty on the afternoon and sixth of the series midway through the third period. Sophomore winger Zoey Krock put the punctuation mark on the game with 39 seconds left to extend the Bulldog lead to 3-0.
When all the ice settled, Gascon, who has now not allowed a goal in 194:04 of action – the longest stretch of her collegiate career – had turned away all 33 shots she faced to pick up her ninth shutout of the season – the second most in the NCAA and third most in a single-season in UMD program history. Gascon’s assault on the record books also lifts her into a tie for second all-time in career shutouts – she joins Kayla Black in second, who had 20 shutouts between 2012-16.
The Bulldogs also dominated on special teams, scoring on the only power play they had of the game and holding the Tommies scoreless in four attempts. The Bulldogs have now scored a power play in each of their last four outings and have not allowed a power play goal in their last three skates.
UST outshot UMD 33-23 in the game, while goaltender Julia Minotti made 20 saves.
The Bulldogs (17-12-3, 13-10-3) will take their four-game home winning streak on the road next weekend when they conclude the regular season against the No. 3 University of Minnesota at Ridder Arena.
