Dino Crisis 1 and 2 on Steam as a surprise shadow drop

Sony has shocked the world with probably its most stacked State of Play livestream in years. Yet, in the midst of all the exciting new Xbox and PC games announced during it, one announcement slipped under the radar that has me personally stoked.

Capcom revealed that it has shadow-dropped two classic PlayStation 1 titles, Dino Crisis 1 and Dino Crisis 2, onto Steam with a 50% discount for a limited time ($3.99 for Dino Crisis 1 on Steam and $3.99 for Dino Crisis 2 on Steam).

Last year, Dino Crisis 1 and 2 were re-released on PC by GOG in its efforts to preserve old games. Now, Steam users can experience these two classic titles for themselves and on the Steam Deck as they’re fully playable on it, albeit with DRM issues they’ll need to work around.

For those unaware, Dino Crisis was a series of games that asked, “What if we made Resident Evil but with dinosaurs instead of zombies?” and the result was pure 1990s goodness.

The first Dino Crisis was a traditional survival-horror game with an extreme emphasis on ‘survival’ as resources, enemies, and puzzles were more deadly and challenging than the PS1 Resident Evil trilogy.

The sequel, Dino Crisis 2, functioned more like an action game where you mow down hordes of dinosaurs with increasingly ridiculous weapons and mechanics that pre-dated the action-oriented entries of Resident Evil, like Resident Evil 4.

Could this lead to a long-awaited Dino Crisis remake?

This is the second time Capcom has re-released Dino Crisis 1 and 2 on PC, and it’s giving me hope that the company may be gearing up for a new entry in the series.

Capcom’s been on a roll lately, reviving some of its dormant IP like Mega Man, Onimusha, Okami, and even re-releasing Breath of Fire 4 (my favorite Capcom JRPG of all time) onto GOG, so who’s to say Capcom isn’t preparing for a Dino Crisis remake?

I certainly would love Dino Crisis to make a comeback because this franchise had cool ideas and ways to thrill the player that could be taken a step further with a modern-day remake (I would love to see the One-Eyed T-Rex or Gigantosaurus from Dino Crisis 2 rendered in the RE Engine).

Whether this turns out to be a one-off deal or the beginning of something greater, we’ll keep you posted on further news from Capcom regarding Dino Crisis and any potential big-name re-releases of their older titles (here’s hoping they’ll bring back every Breath of Fire game and old Monster Hunter game to Steam).
