BACK IN THE CENTER: The Union College men’s hockey team returns home to M&T Bank Center for the first time in 27 days when it plays host to Colgate University on Friday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. and #9/10 Cornell University on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. The Garnet Chargers are tied with Clarkson with 21 points in seventh place of the ECAC Hockey standings, but the Golden Knights own the tiebreaker after completing the season sweep of Union with an 8-7 overtime win on Feb. 7.
ETIENNE LESSARD: First-year defender Etienne Lessard recorded four assists against Clarkson on Feb. 7. He produced the ninth 4+ assist game in Union’s Division I men’s hockey history and first since Cole Maier ’19 against St. Cloud State on Jan. 4, 2019. Lessard is the 11th player in NCAA Division I men’s hockey to have a 4+ assists game this season and is the only first-year defender to do so. Stephanie Bourque of the Union women’s hockey team had four assists in a five-point performance against Delaware on Nov. 28 this season.
RAIDER REVIEW: Colgate is the only team in ECAC Hockey with a winning record in conference play (.563) but losing record overall (.446). The Raiders are coming off a split with Cornell, averaging 2.5 goals per game against the Big Red. They are the fifth team to score three or more goals against Cornell this season, doing so in a 3-2 overtime win on Feb. 7. Max Nagel recorded three points for Colgate against Cornell, marking the most points in a game against the Big Red this season.
BIG RED REVIEW: Cornell has been the hardest team to score on this season, averaging an NCAA-best 1.91 goals-against per game. Cornell also averages 3.48 goals per game, but have six wins when scoring below its season average, including a 2-1 victory over Union on Nov. 21.
NUMBERS TO KNOW
86 – Union men’s hockey players have totaled 86 individual-game performances this season with a faceoff percentage of.500 or better (min. five draws).
11 – There have been 11 four+ assist games this season in NCAA Division I men’s hockey, and Etienne Lessard is the only first-year defenseman to accomplish the feat this season.
5 – Union has played in five games where the final score was 8-7, with a 2-3 record in those games. Prior to Saturday’s 8-7 loss to Clarkson, the last time Union played in a game with that score was also an 8-7 loss to Clarkson on Nov. 13, 1993. Union has defeated Oswego by a score of 8-7 on two occasions (Jan. 10, 1981 & Feb. 16, 1988).
INSIDE THE SERIES: Union is 0-2-2 against Colgate during a current four-game winless streak. Union has played to three ties in a four game span against a single conference team once before, tying Brown three games in a row from Feb. 24, 1995 – Feb. 2, 1996. Colgate has defeated the Garnet Chargers in four of its last five trips to Schenectady, N.Y. but this will be the Raiders’ first game in M&T Bank Center. Cornell is 2-1 in Schenectady since Josh Hauge took over as head coach of the Garnet Chargers.
COLGATE DAY: Every Friday the 13th, the Colgate University community celebrates “Colgate Day.” Friday’s matchup with Union at M&T Bank Center will be the Colgate men’s hockey team’s 11th game on Colgate Day since Jan. 13, 2006. Colgate is 3-7 in its last 10 games on Colgate Day. Union and Colgate have never played a men’s hockey game on Colgate Day before, but the two sides have met head-to-head on Friday the 13th twice in two other sports. They played to a 1-1 draw in men’s soccer on Nov. 13, 1957 and to a 3-3 tie in men’s tennis on May 13, 1921.
FOUR POINTER
Parker Lindauer (vs Niagara, Oct. 18), Tyler Dunbar (vs Quinnipiac, Dec. 6), and Etienne Lessard (@ Clarkson, Feb. 7) have all produced four-point games this season. It is the most 4+ point games in a season for Union since 2016-17 when Mike Veccione ’17 (twice), Spencer Foo ’17, and Sebastian Vidmar ’19 combined for four.
RESILIENT-GC
Union came up short against Clarkson on Feb. 7 in what would have been the team’s third two-goal comeback victory of the season. The Garnet Chargers erased a pair of two-goal deficits in the loss, coming back from down 3-1 and 6-4, and netted five game-tying goals. Union also erased a two-goal deficit against Colgate but tied with the Raiders 4-4 in late November.
SWITCHING IT UP
Union entered its weekend series against St. Lawrence and Clarkson 15-0-1 when Brandon Buhr recorded at least one point and 0-9-1 when he was held without one. That streak was flipped on its head when Buhr did not have a point against St. Lawrence in a 4-1 win and then had two assists against Clarkson in the 8-7 (OT) loss.
“BUHR”STING WITH POINTS
Brandon Buhr notched the 17th multi-point game of his career on Feb. 7 with two assists against Clarkson. It was his fifth career game with two assists, four of which have come in his senior season. He is tied with Tyler Dunbar for the team lead in points (27) and leads the squad in goals (17).
SEEING DOUBLE
Brandon Buhr (17g, 10a), Tyler Dunbar (11g, 16a), and Ben Muthersbaugh (11g, 14a) all have double-digit goals and assists. Union last had three players with double-digit goals and assists in 2023-24. Colby MacArthur (8g, 10a) and Lucas Buzziol (8g, 9a) are close to joining Buhr, Dunbar, and Muthersbaugh in double-figures, and the last time Union boasted five players with double-digit goals and assists was 2018-19, led by Ryan Walker ’19 (15g, 14a).
#RANKED
With wins over Quinnipiac on Dec. 6 (ranked #8 at the time) and Princeton on Jan. 10 (ranked #20/19), Union has already earned its most ranked wins in a season since 2018-19. Union has only had one victory over a ranked opponent in each of the last three years. The Garnet Chargers will be looking for their third victory over a ranked team on Saturday when they take on #9/10 Cornell. This is the highest the Big Red have been ranked when taking on Union since they were the #2 team in the country on Feb. 14, 2020.
IT STARTS ON THE DOT
Colby MacArthur produced the fourth perfect performance on the faceoff dot this season for Union (minimum five draws) on Feb. 6 against St. Lawrence. He went 5-0 against the Saints, joining Lucas Buzziol (5-0 vs New Hampshire), Parker Lindauer (5-0 vs Sacred Heart), and Nate Hanley (7-0 vs Brown). The Garnet Chargers have the 14th-best faceoff percentage in the country at 52.3% for the season, but their 51.2% mark in conference play is the seventh-best.
THE (PENALTY) KILLERS
Despite giving up a power-play goal against Clarkson on Feb. 7, Union still owns the top penalty-kill percentage in the country at 90.1%. In conference play, Union has successfully killed off 44 of 50 penalties (88.0%), good for the second-best ECAC Hockey PK behind Harvard (93.2%).
OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
Union’s captain Nick Young has played in 112 straight games dating back to January 2023. On Jan. 30 of this season, Young recorded his 200th career blocked shot, totaling four against Dartmouth. He had an eight-game streak from Nov. 22, 2025 – Jan. 9, 2026 with at least one blocked shot.
BEAT THE STREAK
Lucas Buzziol has the longest active point streak on the team at four games. He has two goals and three assists over that span. Tyler Dunbar owns the longest streak of the season for the Garnet Chargers at six games.
PRIMARY PARKER
Twelve of Parker Lindauer’s team-leading 19 assists have been the primary assist. He has also assisted on eight of Brandon Buhr’s team-leading 17 goals.
LEADING BY EXAMPLE
Nick Young serves as the captain of the Union College men’s hockey team along with Brandon Buhr and Parker Lindauer as alternate captains. Young is second on the team in blocked shots (40), Buhr leads in goals (17), and Lindauer leads the way with 19 assists.
SETTING THE (DUN)BAR HIGH
Tyler Dunbar’s 27 points are tied for the team lead with Brandon Buhr and are the third-most in college hockey among defensemen. He has scored a point in 18 of Union’s 28 games in 2025-26 and owns the team’s longest point streak of the season at six from Nov. 14-30.
67 AND COUNTING
Nate Hanley registered his 67th career assist on Jan. 30 when he helped set up Alex Laurenza for a score in the third period. He has the 10th-most assists in Union’s Division I history and is seven away from cracking Union’s all-time assist leaderboard. Hanley is tied for the seventh-most helpers among active Division I players and 11th-most across DI and DIII. He also has 90 career points, which is tied for the 19th-most among active players in DI hockey.
UNION DID WHAT?
In their 5-4 win over RPI on Jan. 24, the Garnet Chargers won a game in which they allowed an empty-net goal for the first time since Dec. 7, 2013. However, that rare instance occurred under slightly different circumstances compared to Union’s miraculous comeback in this year’s Mayors’ Cup. Back in 2013, Quinnipiac scored on an empty net during a delayed penalty in the second period. Union retook the lead shortly after and eventually skated to a 6-4 victory. Prior to Saturday, Union had not won a game when allowing an empty-net goal under traditional circumstances since at least 2005-06 (when game-by-game stats are available).
GOALIE U
Union, Quinnipiac, and UMass are the only three teams in the country that boast more than one goalie with multiple shutouts on the season. Cameron Korpi has recorded three shutouts and Brayden Gillespie has a pair of clean sheets for the Garnet Chargers so far this year.
NON-CON SUCCESS
The Garnet Chargers are 10-1-1 (.875) in non-conference action so far, which would be the program’s best out-of-conference mark if the season ended today. Union’s best non-conference record at the end of the regular season and postseason is 11-2-1 (.821) in 1976-77. Union needs to win multiple playoff games in order to finish the season with its best non-league record ever and outdo the Union squad from 49 years ago.

HERE’S TO 300 MORE!
Union earned its 300th ECAC Hockey victory with a win against #20/19 Princeton on Jan. 10. The Garnet Chargers originally accepted the ECAC’s invitation to join its Division I men’s hockey league on Jan. 28, 1991. The program replaced Army, keeping the number of teams in the league at 12. Union played its first Division I contest Nov. 1, 1991, a 9-6 loss to Merrimack. On Jan. 17, 1992, Craig Ferrero scored with 10 seconds left in overtime as Union recorded its first ECAC victory, a 2-1 triumph at Dartmouth. Luigi Villa stopped 45 shots for Union in goal. 12,047 days later, Tyler Dunbar scored the game-winner while Brayden Gillespie made 21 saves in Union’s 300th conference win.
2026 RICHTER AWARD WATCH LIST
Cameron Korpi was named to the 2026 Richter Award Watch List. Korpi already has three shutouts on the season and made a season-high 32 saves against UMass Lowell on Nov. 14. He helped Union start the season 4-0-1 and won ECAC Hockey’s Goalie of the Month award for October. Of the 29 netminders listed, Korpi is one of eight Americans garnering Richter Award recognition.
GOOD HABITS BEFORE THE NEW YEAR
Union won 12 games before the calendar turned to January for the first time since the 2017-18 season. The Garnet Chargers had 14 victories before the ball dropped during the 2016-17 season.
GILLESPIE’S ISLAND
Brayden Gillespie made 31 saves during his first collegiate shutout on Dec. 12 against #8 Quinnipiac. He is the first Union netminder to shut out a ranked foe since Alex Sakellaropoulos ’17 against #13 Merrimack on Nov. 28, 2015. He earned another ranked win against #20/19 Princeton on Jan. 10, making 21 saves, and another shutout on Jan. 16 against Brown.
NO SOPHOMORE SLUMPS
Ben Muthersbaugh leads Union’s sophomore class with 25 points (11g, 14a). He is tied for the 22nd-most points among sophomores in college hockey, and second-year Garnet Chargers have accumulated 87 points this season.
LIMITING THE Ls
Union suffered back-to-back losses for the first time against Miami and Princeton, 16 games into the season. The last time it took Union that long to drop consecutive games was 2016-17, when the Garnet Chargers didn’t lose in back-to-back contests until their 21st game of the season.
A DECEMBER TO REMEMBER
After a 3-1 record as a team in December, Brayden Gillespie was recognized as the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month, and Tyler Dunbar earned Adapt Nutrition Defender of the Month honors. Gillespie was 3-0 in the final month of 2025 and earned his first collegiate shutout. Dunbar averaged 1.5 points per game in December and accumulated seven blocked shots.
TEAM OF THE WEEK
Union was featured as College Hockey News’ “Team of the Week” after a 2-0 weekend on Nov. 7 and Nov. 8 where it outscored UMass Lowell and New Hampshire 13-1 overall and improved to 8-2-1 on the season. During an interview with College Hockey News’ editor, head coach Josh Hauge said, “I love our hockey team … We believe we’re good … We’re excited about trying to continue to grow the program and get it back to where it can be.”
M&T BANK CENTER
This season, the men’s and women’s Union hockey teams will call the state-of-the-art M&T Bank Center its home, becoming the primary tenant of the 100,000-square-foot multi-purpose venue. The arena holds a capacity of 2,200 for hockey games and expands to 3,600 for other sporting events, trade shows, special events, and conventions. Highlights include seven luxury suites, a spacious hospitality suite, two full-service concession stands, and an elegant bar overlooking the Mohawk River. M&T Bank Center is the 16th hockey venue in the NCAA to open in the last 10 years.
SENIORITY PRIORITY
Union hits the ice with eight seniors, tied with Niagara and St. Thomas for the seventh-largest senior class across Division I. The Garnet Chargers’ average age as a team is 22.5, meaning they are tied for the seventh-oldest team in the country.
DON’T COUNT THESE GUYS OUT
Union stormed back from a 3-0 deficit and scored five unanswered goals in a 5-3 win over Mercyhurst on Oct. 11. It marked the Garnet Chargers’ first victory after trailing by three goals since Dec. 1, 2013, when they erased a 4-1 deficit to beat Penn State. Daniel Ciampini scored the game-winner in that comeback with three seconds left in regulation, breaking the hearts of 5,177 Penn State fans in University Park, Pa. Union also erased a two-goal deficit with less than three minutes to play in the 2026 Mayors’ Cup, eventually winning in overtime thanks to a highlight-reel goal from Brandon Buhr. On Feb. 7, Union erased a pair of two-goal deficits and scored five game-tying goals against Clarkson, but eventually fell 8-7 in overtime.
BUHR WATCHING
College Hockey News released its “Players to Watch” in ECAC Hockey and recognized Brandon Buhr with some high praise. “Buhr is shifty and has a good shot, which makes him successful. He is also good at getting to the important areas of the ice, which is the way his coach, Josh Hauge, would like his team to play. Union as a whole is returning a deep group, and [Buhr] could be in the mix for Player of the Year.”
NEED A RECHARGE?
The Garnet Chargers lost 12 players from its 2024-25 roster to graduation, the transfer portal, and the pros. Those departures accounted for 101 points last season, but Union still kept its top goal scorer in Brandon Buhr (19) and point scorer in Colby MacArthur (29). Not to mention, four of Union’s 20-point scorers from last season are still on the squad, and Union’s 78 “returning” goals are the seventh-most in Division I.
FRESH FACES
Hauge and his staff brought in two of each positional group to round out their recruiting class. Alex Laurenza (F), Troy Pelton (F), Etienne Lessard (D), Ollie Chessler (D) Brayden Gillespie (G), and Brendan Holahan (G) all get their first taste of college hockey this season. Will Felicio (D, Michigan), Carter Rose (D, Clarkson), Tyler Dunbar (D, Colorado College), Cameron Korpi (G, Michigan), and Luke Buss (F, Wisconsin) end up in Schenectady as transfers after earlier stops around the Division I hockey landscape.
WHAT’S UP BROTHER?
They say your teammates are like your brothers. For Carter and Cameron Korpi, one of their teammates actually is their brother. Carter is three years older than Cameron, and this will be the first time they’ve played hockey on the same team together (other than knee hockey games in the basement of their childhood home).
GO BIG BLUE?
Three Garnet Chargers previously played college hockey at the University of Michigan. Cameron Korpi and Will Felicio both played for Michigan last season, and Brendan Miles transferred to Union after the 2023-24 campaign. Tyler Dunbar, Miles, and Cameron and Carter Korpi all hail from Michigan as well. Across Division I men’s hockey, there are 91 players from the Wolverine State.
