SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cougars faced Monterey Bay for games two and three of their four-game series against the Otters. Monterey Bay proved to be a tough opponent for the Cougars, taking the win in both games on Friday afternoon.
Game 1: Monterey Bay 13, Azusa Pacific 4.
How it Happened: The Otters wasted no time putting runs on the board, opening the second inning with a walk by Noah Zertuche, a single by Xander Sielken, and a sacrifice fly by James Starkus. The next batter in the Otter lineup, Conner Smith, followed with a double to center field, allowing two runners to score.
APU remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning, trailing 4-0. Tyler Preece started the rally with a double down the left field line and later scored on a sac fly to left by Noah Lane to put the Cougars on the board. Four consecutive walks by Blake Hagerty, Diego Orozco, Will Allen, and Steven Lukasiewicz brought in another run, cutting the deficit to 4-2 heading into the midpoint of the game.
Monterey Bay continued to stack runs as the game progressed, scoring three runs in the fourth inning while capitalizing on two Cougar errors. The Otters let loose in the fifth, plating six runs and ending the inning with a 13-2 lead.
The Cougars continued to battle and found holes in the Otter defense in the seventh inning. Steven Lukasiewicz singled to the right side, Bryce Robinette drew a walk, and Jacob Hayes drove in a run with an RBI single up the middle. Noah Lane followed suit with an RBI single of his own, sending Robinette home.
Both teams were held scoreless throughout the rest of the game, as the Otters quieted the Cougar bats and closed out the game 13-4.
