So i figured yous might have an idea as to why / what is happening here because i'm lost and searching online i can't find anything.

I did reach out to Gigabyte for a seperate issue but they're radio silent.

The board is new to the UK but it's priced competitively against all the other X870E motherboards and provides more features;

No gpu lane sharing, Metal backplate, internal hdmi port etc

Timeline:

  • Jan 24th 26 – Installed and on the latest Bios, F6.
  • Jan 24th-28th, fine but noticed high nvme temps on the 2nd nvme drive, the third temp (ASIC?)
  • Jan 29th – removed the motherboard, reinstalled B650, tested nvme temps, confirmed the B650 is better in general use for the nvmes.
  • Jan 29th – reinstalled X870e x3d, later that night the pc refused to shutdown, kept turning back on, after 5+ attempts, i held the case power button and called it a day.
  • Jan 30th – Turned pc on, tested for the issue, it happens on sleep OR shutdown, decided to replug motherboard connections (24 pin / 8 pin eps), this "fixed it, before i unplugged them i did inspect them for any cables that might've been plugged over 1 side too much (missing some pins) or anything, i also pushed on them and no clicks… they seemed seated fine.

The fix lasted 1 day and the issue came back, i had not touched the pc between the replugging and the issue coming back.

Also, the "fix" for the day – made it so the pc did not enter sleep mode at all, i left the pc for 2 hours, after 15 minutes it normally goes into sleep mode.

After the day of it working (but without sleep), i turned the pc on, left the pc for 15 minutes and it went into sleep – however later that day, sleep and shutdown caused the same shutdown startup issue.

At first i thought maybe it was the psu power cables but now, no.

I started troubleshooting.

  • Removed extra USB devices from rear
  • Disabled wake ability from network adapter in device manager
  • Checked BIOS for power related options (No Wake on lan options anywhere), ErP was disabled (but it worked without this prior), i enabled it and the shutdown then started working… once, then it came back with the same issue.
  • Removed front panel connector and turned it on via shorting the two pwr pins
  • Checked what woke the pc using "powercfg -lastwake" and i just get: Wake History Count – 1 Wake History [0] Wake Source Count – 0
  • I set my nvidia power management from maximum performance to normal and when the pc shutdown but restarted itself, it definetly shuts down because my gpu behaviour did change (Max performance prevents 0rpm mode and requires a full reboot to change).

I then had enough and when the pc shutdown, it instantly started to boot back up – the moment the lights came back on, i decided to turn off the pc manually by the pc case, i was going to replace the motherboard again with my old one. The pc turned off from me holding the power button – then turned back on. If i'm not mistaken, this is PRE post at this point since it did already shut down, meaning it's got to be the board?

I wanted to secure a pcie gen 5 board for my 5090, yes pcie gen 4 should be fine but i have a feeling there are weird quirks at times with pcie gen 4.

I tired the X870 tomahawk In Nov 2024 and that board caused so many issues (Which people still have to this day with most of MSI pcie gen 5 boards it seems, not everyone but a lot), mainly the cold boot causing gpu to run 1.1 speeds or so and crash.

Now i tried this new x870e aorus x3d board and seemingly have issues…

at 0:16 you can see the power go off, AIO/gpu go off but less than 1 second in, the gpu flickers. indicating it powered back on alongside the rest. This behaviour is the same for both shutdown and sleep.

Am i crazy? As i said before, i had this happen when trying to manually shut down the power via case button after it flickered back on too – which should be without any windows settings as it's pre post.
