One of the reasons we start award season with the “most underrated MMORPG” is to get people thinking in a positive way, but you know that anything one person says is underrated is going to get a few people complaining that actually, said game is way overrated. I’d be worried about you guys if you didn’t march forth when someone is wrong on the internet. And even if you didn’t, Reddit will. (Some guy on Reddit, did, in fact, argue relentlessly about our pick. Of course.)

Anyhow, that’s the whole reason we run this companion poll toward the end of awards season. Everything from World of Warcraft, New World, and Black Desert have “won” this poll; last year, it was Throne and Liberty (which also took GOTY, so clearly some folks were mad about that). By the way, you get an extra prize if you vote for something you’ve never played. No, not really.

A few caveats for this poll: I mostly put big MMORPGs that people talk about a lot as well as some longstanding solid middle-tier MMORPGs. I did not include lil indies (guys if they have only 300 players, they aren’t overrated), and I didn’t include games that are too close to the border between MMOs and multiplayers (so like, no No Man’s Sky or Destiny 2 this year – if you disagree with that, say so in the comments because I may change my mind again next year). Which MMOs were just excessively overrated beyond what they deserved in 2025, specifically?
