Street Fighter 6 is still going strong in the middle of its third year already though there could be some interesting changes coming down the pipeline at some point.

Capcom is now looking to hire a new fighting game developer, which has potentially big implications for Street Fighter and also maybe something else in the future.

To kick off the new year, the company opened up a job posting for a new battle planner for fighting games specifically.

Said listing has a job description that includes the following: conceptualizing each system within the game, character planning, planning of various game modes, Creating specification documents, creating and implementing game data, and adjusting battle balance.

One point of interest in this is there’s no mention of Street Fighter 6 itself on the page.

There’s also the task descriptions of game system concepts and game mode planning, which caught our eye as well.

Those don’t sound like they’d really be needed for an established product like Street Fighter 6, but it could just be skills they deem necessary for the job in general.

If they are hiring a brand new battle planner on top of their existing team, though, this may be our first indication that Capcom is looking to start up work on a brand new fighting game.

With how long game development takes now, it is realistic that Capcom may be entering early production on Street Fighter 7 already since SF6 has been out for over two and a half years now.

There is of course the more exciting prospect too that it could be something that’s not Street Fighter.

Both Capcom and SNK have expressed interest in potentially making Capcom vs. SNK 3, and we’ve also heard rumors about a new Marvel vs. Capcom despite Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls being on the horizon.

No matter what if this position is for a new project, however, they’d be years away from showing it off to the public.

There’s a few other options this hiring could point to as well that wouldn’t necessarily be connected to a new game.

It may also mean that Capcom is either looking to replace Street Fighter 6’s current battle planner Ryuichi ‘Woshige’ Shigeno or add another one to join him on the team.

Coming from being a pro player, Woshige started working for Capcom as a tester for Street Fighter 4 and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom before becoming the combat director of Street Fighter 5 and then battle planner of Street Fighter 6.

As far as we know currently, Woshige is still in that position at Capcom, but the company has been losing some of its talent lately including some legendary fighting game artists to Hideaki Itsuno’s new studio.

If Woshige were to be replaced on SF6, then it could lead to a character and gameplay design shift in philosophy and ideas, which could be interesting to see play out.

Although the reception to Street Fighter 6 has been generally much better than its predecessor, there are obviously still aspects that some players are raising complaints about like Drive Rush and throw loops.

Ultimately, even if we don’t know what this battle planner position is meant for exactly, it does point to developments happening behind the scenes for the fighting game division of some sort.

Street Fighter 6’s Director and Producer recently shared their New Year’s messages as well to discuss what they’re looking at for the game here in 2026 and beyond.
