Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite will likely go down in fighting game history for the bad decisions that were made during the development process more so than anything else. One such bad decision was the exclusion of X-Men characters for the roster.
Recently, IHeartJustice hosted a panel in which he, as well as Lythero and Zyzx, “prosecuted” Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite as a bad game with Maximilian Dood attempting to defend it (with mentions regarding the Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite & Beyond mod).
Funnily enough, when the subject about the game’s roster came up, even Maximilian Dood had to throw some shade towards the Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. From here, Maximilian Dood recounted an interesting story in which he apparently tried to tell Marvel producers how important the X-Men were to the legacy of Marvel vs. Capcom.
“At E3 2017, right after the demo came out, I had an interview with whatever producers were at Marvel Games or Marvel adjacent,” begun Maximilian. “And they were very curious to get everybody’s hot takes and super good buzzworthy word of mouth into a video that would go online.”
Unfortunately for these Marvel producers, Maximilian Dood was very eager to talk about characters that, at the time, didn’t really have a place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe — the X-Men.
“And they would start asking me about characters, and specifically focusing around characters because that was the thing I said I was the most excited about.
“To put it bluntly, they started asking me about characters. I said ‘X-Men. That I can’t wait that X-Men are going to be in. I love X-Men.'”
These Marvel producers were probably well aware that the X-Men would be absent from Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite’s roster. As a result, they tried to shift the subject towards other characters, but Maximilian Dood apparently wouldn’t budge on this.
“They were like, ‘Are there any other Marvel characters?'” continued Maximilian Dood.
“And to be real, that interview never made it to the light of day. I was a little verbally straight to their faces, insulted, that this game would not have the things that we wanted.”
Later in the video, Maximilian Dood talked about just how much “corporate meddling” affected Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.
“And here’s the crazy part: this game definitely had the ‘corporate meddling’ attached to it,” declared Maximilian Dood.
“This game definitely reeked of a lot of that stuff because even for when I was asking the producers like 10 years ago about MvCI, I was like ‘So, where are these characters? Is there a chance of X-Men and all this stuff?”
Sadly, it would seem that Maximilian Dood wasn’t ever given a direct answer about this. Instead, he was just told to “wait.”
“And I was pretty much told that… ‘Just wait.’ You know, ‘Just wait. We have a lot of plans for the game, just wait.”
