It’s straight up nostalgia and rewriting history. Prior to MW2019 Cod hasn’t had a grounded a gritty cod since Waw and even that had Zombies and Ray guns.
Cod isn’t grounded even in the campaigns. It’s an over the top Michael Bay movie with cliche villains, cliche plots and cliche set pieces.
