The Game Awards 2025 went down last night with plenty of announcements and awards to go around.
Although neither Kakeru nor Weibo|MenaRD unfortunately ended up winning the Best Esports Athlete at The Game Awards, there was still another category specifically for fighting games.
Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves ended up taking home the trophy for Best Fighting Game.
The return to Southtown after 25 years was up against 2XKO, the Capcom Fighting Collection 2, Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection and Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage.
This decision feels fitting considering Fatal Fury was the only brand new and complete title in the category since the rest was made up of two compilations, a beta and an enhanced re-release.
If 2XKO had won, however, it wouldn’t be the first time a fighting game beta had won the award considering MultiVersus did so previously, which didn’t work out for them in the long run.
“FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves” has won the “Best Fighting Game” at The Game Awards 2025.

We gave Fatal Fury pretty high praise in our initial review though the game has faced some challenges since release with many players pointing to fighter balance as an issue.
That may be changing soon though with Fatal Fury Season 2 beginning in January after Mr. Big just launched as the final DLC character of the first season this week.
This was one of the smaller awards given out unfortunately, so there was no acceptance speech given by the developers.
As for fighting game announcements, we saw Caitlyn revealed for 2XKO, Ella Mental announced for Invincible VS and a sneak peek teaser trailer for the Street Fighter film.
Congratulations to SNK taking home the prize.
