So I was digging through some old boxes and I found my original Call of Duty®: United Offensive and Call of Duty® 2 (2005) PC discs. Instant wave of nostalgia.
It took me right back to where it all started for me, playing the very first Call of Duty in my mom’s kitchen on her computer back in 2004. That was the moment I fell in love with the franchise.
And honestly? Call of Duty 2 is still the best one in the entire franchise, and it’s not even close. The campaign was incredible, the atmosphere was unmatched, and the multiplayer was absolute perfection. Peak COD.
It reminded me of when Call of Duty actually meant something when it was a respectful, competent, and surprisingly realistic WWII shooter. United Offensive even added the ability to run, which felt groundbreaking at the time.
I also used to help run an Easy Company clan back in the day. Anyone here remember clan nights, realism units, rifle-only servers, or those massive custom objective maps that could last forever? Those were truly special times.
And I’ve gotta ask:
Does anyone still play multiplayer on United Offensive or Call of Duty 2 today?
I’d love to know if there’s still a community alive somewhere.
Some of my favorite memories were the modded infected-style modes on CoD2. Survivors started with weapons and basically unlimited ammo, and one player began as the zombie. It was the best version of infected I’ve ever played. When infected showed up in later CODs they gave zombies throwing knives, cut ammo to nothing, and matches ended instantly — nowhere near as fun.
I think I’m posting this because I’m just sad about what Call of Duty has become. I haven’t played seriously since Modern Warfare 3 around 2011. I remember I actually returned modern warfare 3 because it was too similar to modern warfare 2. Black Ops 1 was the last truly incredible COD for me — I still jump on through Plutonium on PC sometimes.
I’ve always loved Battlefield too, but that series has changed a lot as well. Battlefield 1 was incredible, but Battlefield 6 just doesn’t have the heart of the older games.
Anyway, didn’t mean for this to turn into a nostalgia dump, just wanted to share the moment and see if anyone else remembers these days. And again, if anyone is still playing UO or CoD2 multiplayer… where are you guys hiding?
