The Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection was recently released digitally. Collectors will have to wait until December 12, 2025 to get a physical copy.
Ultimately, Mortal Kombat 4 is the only 3D game that is part of the collection. It’s a little strange that only the arcade port of Mortal Kombat 4 is included, but Digital Eclipse has said before that even getting that version included is a pretty big deal.
Unfortunately, Digital Eclipse just doesn’t have the means to port the PlayStation or Dreamcast versions of Mortal Kombat 4 to be part of the Legacy Kollection. However, there’s the particularly odd omission of Mortal Kombat 4 for the Game Boy Color.
Not only is Digital Eclipse capable of porting Game Boy Color games into the Legacy Kollection considering that other Game Boy titles are present, but Mortal Kombat 4 for the Game Boy Color was actually originally developed by Digital Eclipse. Perhaps it was excluded for quality reasons considering that it’s now part of the “worst fighting games” ever list on the YouTube channel of Matt McMuscles.
Indeed, Mortal Kombat 4 is known to be an especially bad game for the Game Boy Color. Fighting games on handhelds have rarely worked out, but this was especially true in this instance in which the developers effectively tried to put a 3D fighter on a handheld.
This port looks so bad from an aesthetic standpoint that Matt McMuscles even chastises his past self for describing other fighting games for being harsh on the eyes. Combined with its awful soundtrack, you’ve got a headache waiting to happen when trying to play this game.
Needless to say, maybe Digital Eclipse made the decision to exclude Mortal Kombat 4 for the Game Boy Color due to quality reasons. Check it all out in the video below:
