In all of fighting game history, there’s no instance more famous than Evo Moment #37 despite taking place more than 20 years ago now.
We’ve seen the Daigo Parry recreated in a number of other fighting games over the years, but it basically almost never happens with the same characters outside of Street Fighter until now.
With the release of Chun-Li in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves this week, SNK couldn’t help themselves and made their own tribute to Evo Moment #37 in mostly accurate fashion.
The company recently repeated history with Ken and Chun-Li both appearing in a completely different series.
Their fun clip intercuts snippets of the original Street Fighter 3: Third Strike exchange between Justin Wong and BST|Daigo Umehara and new City of the Wolves footage.
Fatal Fury does have something close to parries with Just Defense, and SNK was smart enough to make Ken’s JD animation the same as Third Strike’s in preparation for this moment.

SNK even included the signature white Ken and Chun-Li outfit colors for their classic costumes in Fatal Fury too.
So it makes you kinda wonder if the developers made sure to put them in the game for this purpose.
We get to see Ken use Just Defense on all of Chun’s Hoyoku-sen Super just like the Daigo Parry, but the ending isn’t quite the same.
Since the Just Defense doesn’t give him enough time for a full jump in, Ken has to settle for a simpler combo into Shippu Jinrai-kyaku for the KO.
And of course it wouldn’t be an Evo Moment #37 reference without Justin Wong chiming in too.

Last year, Daigo Umehara discussed his Evo Moment run and revealed he was originally planning to quit competition after that, but obviously it didn’t come to pass since he’s still going strong more than two decades later.
Although we’re used to seeing just the same shot of the moment that changed fighting games, MarkMan Julio did uncover an alternate recording of the Daigo Parry where the late fLoE tried to warn Justin not to use his Super.
We also put together an early review for Chun-Li in Fatal Fury where we quite enjoyed SNK’s interpretation on the Street Fighter icon.
