Fatal Fury is basically the origin of SNK fighting games and despite their mother series being inactive for decades, many of their most popular characters have stayed in the cultural zeitgeist through King of Fighters and bigger crossovers, most notably Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui.

One such character which has remained in the public consciousness of fighting gamers thanks to the King of Fighters series remained conspicuously absent in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves — but with its second season drawing ever closer, we’re already seeing some hints that her time to reappear in her origin franchise may be closer than we thought.

The character in question is none other than Mary Ryan, better known as “Blue Mary” who debuted as a new character back in Fatal Fury 3 and has remained pretty firmly as Terry Bogard’s love interest throughout the years.

With Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves following up on Garou: Mark of the Wolves, thus taking place a good amount of years after the original series, her absence was very notable.

It’s been a question on fans’ minds ever since the previous Fatal Fury game dropped back in 1999 to find out what became of her and her budding relationship with Terry and while City of the Wolves didn’t have her in the roster, she has appeared in some character endings.

Kevin, one of the Garou characters who returned in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, happens to be Mary’s cousin and she fittingly already appears in his ending in the base game, with said ending also showing pretty clearly that Terry and Mary are indeed in a relationship.

Still, while we got to see her new design (which honestly looks a lot like King from Art of Fighting) she still remained absent from the playable roster. However, in recently released guest character Chun-Li’s story ending, Mary makes a very prominent appearance which even culminates with her trying to get a fight in against Chun-Li.

It’s difficult to take this as anything other than a very clear hint that Blue Mary will indeed be joining the roster when Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves debuts its second season next year.

Chun-Li just released for Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves yesterday following other Season 1 additions Andy Bogard, fellow Street Fighter guest character Ken Masters and Joe Higashi. They will be joined early next year by Mr. Big, who serves as an in-company crossover character since he’s the boss from the Art of Fighting series.

After Mr. Big, we’ll be seeing a second season at some point for Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves with developers previously saying we can expect character releases every two months and that they have post-launch support content planned for as far as Season 3.
