Steam users have had a bountiful week so far, despite the Steam Autumn Sale still being fresh in our minds. Recently, we saw one of the best roguelikes ever go really cheap, which was great to see. However, there’s only one thing better than a cheap game, and that’s a free one.

If you’re on the hunt for something new to play but you don’t want to spend a penny, you can do a lot worse than claim the game 911 Operator on Steam during its free period. However, you have to be quick, as it’s only going to stay free for a few days after this post goes live.

911 Operator is free to claim until October 29th

So, there’s good news, and then some bad news, and then a little bit of good news after that. The good news is that you have until October 29th to claim the game 911 Operator for free. It usually sells for $15, so you can save a tidy bit of money with this deal. And yes, it’s free to claim forever; once the promotional period is over, you’ll still have access to the title.

As you might imagine from the title, 911 Operator is all about managing emergency services around a populated area. You have to decide the best course of action for each situation and decide what gets your attention first and foremost. That “cat stuck up a tree” call may seem fine to answer when nothing’s happening, but if the firefighters are currently dealing with a crisis, is it really worth removing resources?

One really cool element of 911 Operator is that you can play the game using a real-life city. As long as OpenStreetMap knows about your city or town, you can use its data to import its real-life streets into the game, put yourself in charge of its emergency services, and see how long you can protect what’s familiar to you.

Here’s how the game describes itself:

In 911 OPERATOR, you take on the role of an emergency dispatcher, who has to rapidly deal with the incoming reports. Your task is not just to pick up the calls, but also to react appropriately to the situation – sometimes giving first aid instructions is enough, at other times a police, fire department or paramedics’ intervention is a necessity. Keep in mind, that the person on the other side of the line might turn out to be a dying daughter’s father, an unpredictable terrorist, or just a prankster. Can you handle all of this?

Okay, so here’s the bad news: while the base game is free, the DLC is not, so you’ll need to pay a little extra if you want the additional goodies. And the slightly-smaller-but-still-good news is that the DLC is currently on a 50% sale until November 9th, giving you plenty of time to sink your teeth into the core game and see if it’s to your liking.
