ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – Two of the best teams in the NUIC go head-to-head Friday when Du-Pec travels to Forreston for our Game of the Week.
Many people wouldn’t have thought that the Cardinals would be in a position to clinch a playoff birth this early in the season. Lena Winslow beat Forreston 50-12 in Week 1.
“We still showed a lot of growth from the season before, and there were a lot of good signs that said we’re gonna be alright,” said head coach Keynon Janicke. “It’s pretty easy once you get in the film room and you watch it.”
The Rivermen have put together an impressive season in the NUIC. They’ve won all five of their games in conference, while scoring over 30 points in each one of those games.
Du-Pec fell to Byron in a non-conference matchup last week, 42-14. The Rivermen scored no points in the second half against the Tigers.
With four out of five offensive linemen being seniors, Du-Pec leans on the ground game to dominate. Starting quarterback Lukas Rossow is playing his first year under center.
“Lukas does exactly what we ask him to do, in the sense that he’s not going to stray outside the game plan,” said his head coach, Kyle DeMus. “There are frustrating times, obviously, but he does a great job keeping a positive attitude and being a great leader for the football team.”
Game time at Forreston High School is at 7 p.m. Friday. We’ll have highlights of the game in the second half of our 10 p.m. newscast, Football Frenzy.
