In Game 2, Jackie Young became the 17th player in WNBA history to score 30 points or more in a WNBA Finals game. She hit a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the third to get to 30 before the fourth quarter.
She’ll always have that over A’ja Wilson.
Safe to say Wilson is going to became the 18th player. Through three quarters, she has 28 points (and 12 rebounds) with 10 minutes to play. But she didn’t get 30 in three like her good friend Jackie.
Young’s 32 points from Game 2 also set the Aces record for points in a WNBA Finals game. She broke the mark set by Kelsey Plum. Wilson needs three points to take down that record.
Working against the MVP: the Aces are up by 17. The likes of Young, Loyd and Gray can put the game out of reach before Wilson gets there. If this game gets out of hand, Hammond would be wise to sit A’ja.
It’s worth noting: the WNBA record for points in a Finals game is 38, set by Angel McCoughtry for Atlanta in 2011. Wilson is definitely in striking distance of breaking that, too.
