It’s been a while since we had any substantial news related to Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, and there’s good reason for that, as IllFonic has shared an update confirming that while the game will remain playable, no new content is in active development.

In their message to players, IllFonic thanked the community for their creativity and passion since the game’s 2022 launch, writing:

“Over the past few years, we’ve been incredibly honored to see so many talented Ghosts and Ghostbusters grace The Firehouse. This community never hesitates to answer the call and that infectious enthusiasm keeps us eager to play with all of you. We’d also be remiss in not mentioning the potent creative talent bursting that has been repeatedly demonstrated by Ghostbusters fans during our #SummerOfSlimer, Doppelbuster, and other contests.

From Samhain to the Boogieman, our journey has been filled with so many special spectral memories following our launch in 2022. However, as our Containment Unit reaches capacity, we wanted to share that most of our team has shifted its focus away from creating new content for Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed for the time being.

Our one-of-a-kind Ghostbusting game will remain playable, and we’ll continue to support the game by addressing any technical issues that may arise. From everyone here at IllFonic, thanks so much for sharing your love of Ghostbusters with us and we look forward to celebrating Ghostbusters Day with everyone next year!”

The most recent DLC for Spirits Unleashed arrived this past January, adding fan-favorite The Real Ghostbusters villain Boogieman to the game’s ghost roster, while this summer saw the “Summer of Slimer” celebration, which delivered a surprise batch of Necro skins. Given the noticeable slowdown in new content, the typical lifespan of an online-based asymmetrical video game, and IllFonic’s growing slate of projects, today’s update shouldn’t be all too surprising.

When it comes to what’s next for IllFonic, the studio recently revealed its Halloween adaptation. Scheduled to launch September 8, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC, the game promises an asymmetrical horror sandbox alongside a single-player story mode, bringing Michael Myers back to video games in terrifying fashion.

Other IllFonic projects are also seeing continued updates. Predator: Hunting Grounds recently added the Oni Predator and is preparing to roll out test servers for balance and gameplay tweaks. Arcadegeddon transitioned to free-to-play earlier this year and is expanding with new content and FSR support for consoles. Meanwhile, Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game recently marked its anniversary with a major update, introducing Klownzilla and new cosmetics.

IllFonic closed their update by thanking fans across all their titles:

“To anyone who’s ever played an IllFonic game – thank you. We can’t stress enough how important your support, enthusiasm, and feedback are to how we shape our titles and ongoing content plans.“

While the future may not hold new DLC, Spirits Unleashed still stands as one of the most unique and faithful interactive takes on the franchise. We at Ghostbusters News also want to thank IllFonic for their dedication and the direct collaboration efforts they’ve shared with us throughout the years.
