MIDWAY, Utah (KUTV) — The famous frozen ice castles at Midway won’t be opening for the upcoming winter season.

In a social media post, Ice Castles officials said it was pausing the Utah location this season as organizers rework their build process and adapt for future conditions.

The Midway Ice Castles promised it was not a good-bye for good but a decision “grounded in growth.”

“We’ve loved sharing years of magical moments with you, your support, enthusiasm, and memories mean the world to us,” Ice Castles said in a statement. “Again, this isn’t the end, just a pause.”

The Midway Ice Castles have become a staple of Utah’s winters. Uniquely hand-sculpted structures provide family-friendly and interactive experiences entirely of ice. Guests can see frozen waterfalls, explore frozen maze-like tunnels and slot canyons, and sit on a frozen throne.

What started as a Utah attraction grew to icy playgrounds across North America with castles in Colorado, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Edmonton, Canada. The ice castles in other locations are expected to open as scheduled for the winter season.

Unseasonably warm temperatures last year forced the Midway Ice Castles to close in early February, melting away the ice. The warm temperatures also forced an early closure for the ice castles in Eagle, Colorado and in Minnesota.

For its Utah location, Ice Castles said, “We look forward to returning soon, stronger and more inspired than ever.”
