Grand Theft Auto 6 is just eight months away from its release date, scheduled for May 26, 2026. Considering May 26 seems like the final release date more than ever now, we should expect more news and reveals about GTA 6’s actual gameplay and how it differs from prior titles, which just happened today.

A key detail coming from an in-game website leak for GTA 6 could mark the end of an iconic staple of GTA: taxis. Whenever anyone thinks of the pastimes and activities throughout Liberty City, Vice City, or San Andreas, taxis are bound to show up, but they might be gone for good.

Taxis Might Be Gone In GTA 6

Cabs Aren’t Around, Just Like Real Life

According to reliable leaker Tez2, posting on gtaforums, the insider discovered several registered domain names owned by Take-Two Interactive. These were registered back on May 27, and the insider speculated that these domain names may correlate to in-game websites in GTA 6.

How it would work is that if you type up the in-game URLs in real life, it would redirect you to the GTA 6 website or something similar, and Tez2 is likely right on the money. The domain names in question reveal various GTA app spoofs, such as “what-up.app,” a parody of WhatsApp. However, one in particular could signal a major change to the GTA franchise.

That domain would be “rydeme.app,” which many assume is a parody of Uber/Lyft based on the name. The Downtown Cab Co. was a built-in contact in GTA 5, and based on the circumstances, it’s wise to assume that “rydeme.app” will replace it on the in-game phone. However, that also means taxis in their beautiful yellow glory might be gone in GTA 6.

Taxis Have Been In Every GTA Game So Far

The End Of An Era

It’s wild to think that taxis might be absent in GTA 6. Sure, they’re gone in real life, replaced by Uber/Lyft, but taxis have been a staple of the GTA franchise since the original GTA in 1997. They have been in every single mainline installment, often having their own minigame attached to them where you complete taxi fares.

As someone who 100% completed every GTA and Red Dead Redemption game, I always enjoyed this minigame. It was a cozy, laid-back experience, with no worries, unlike other hectic minigames, and it was a refreshing change of pace compared to the rest of the title. In GTA games, where certain elements make it a pain to 100% complete, taxi fares were a calming, relaxing experience that I don’t want to see gone in GTA 6.

Sure, the “rydeme.app” will probably be the same thing as calling a cab in GTA 5. However, that iconic yellow vehicle synonymous with the series for diehard GTA fans could disappear for good. Hopefully, a taxi vehicle, at least, will be in GTA 6 or GTA 6 Online, but after completing every GTA game to 100% completion over the past couple of years, the absence of taxis feels like the true end of an era for the franchise.
