Gamescom 2025 was the biggest one yet. But then, it’s the biggest one every year. So, where is all this growth really leading?

How about the death of the console wars? The rise of indie games? Samsung challenging Apple’s mobile gaming dominion, or Xbox releasing its own gaming handheld in a bid to further its relentless marketing campaign, ‘This is an Xbox’?

These were the trends that emerged in Cologne from August 20th-24th as the world’s largest gaming event opened its doors to a mass of excited fans and exhibitors – the highest number of both recorded since Gamescom moved into the Koelnmesse in 2009.

“Our job is to build the best and biggest stage worldwide for games and their communities,” Felix Falk, Managing Director of Game – The German Games Industry Association, tells Newsweek.

“And because the games industry is so incredibly dynamic, this task is never finished. Gamescom must always adapt to the many developments in the world of games.”

One of those developments demanded a seriously massive amount of space. To support the ever-growing popularity of indie games, organisers added an additional 3,000 square meter hall – the equivalent of 30 football fields. Total exhibition space: a sprawling 233,000 square meters.

With no short supply of innovation, the likes of “Super Meat Boy 3D,” “Cult of Blood,” and “Gunboat God” stood toe-to-toe with bigger budget behemoths. In fact, one of Gamescom 2025’s all-around most-anticipated titles was “Hollow Knight: Silksong”, a 2D sidescroller from four-person Australian developer Team Cherry.

“This list shows one thing: Gamescom’s diversity,” says Falk. “We offer the full range of games, from AAA blockbusters to indie must-plays. We also offer content for trading card and board games, provide space for streaming platforms and solo artists, and host unique events such as concerts and the Gamescom cosplay contest.”

Another emerging gaming trend reflected at Gamescom was rampant, unprecedented IP expansion. From “Helldivers 2″‘s DLC themed around Xbox 360 classic “Halo: ODST”, to the chaotic racing collaboration between PAC-MAN and Sonic in “Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds”, we’re seeing more and more cherished platform mascots cross the console divide to cameo in games previously thought off limits.

Past Gamescoms might have played a significant role in helping developers swap ideas. “One of our most important responsibilities is to strengthen Gamescom as a strategic platform,” says Oliver Frese, Chief Operating Officer, Koelnmesse. “Not just as a festival, but as a central arena for the exchange between developers, publishers, policymakers, and the wider public.”

That’s probably not, however, what led Xbox to do something even more unthinkable: release a handheld. Instead, the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X were likely based on nothing but cold, hard data.

Handled gaming devices like the ROG Ally and Steam Deck are increasingly capturing more of the market. Xbox is capitalising on that, and it chose Gamescom 2025 as its debutant ball. Attendees had the chance to go hands-on with the device for the first time before its release on October 16, 2025.

In total, over 335,000 attendees flocked to play with and pore over the latest interactive offerings of approximately 1,500 companies across more than 70 countries.

Those that stayed home contributed to a grand total of 547 million views across the event’s all-encompassing digital coverage, with 44 million views achieved by Opening Night Live alone.

“The scale, diversity, and global energy this year is something we’ve never quite seen before,” Frese says. “It feels like we’re not just back; we’re setting the standard for what’s next.

Gamescom is not only the focal point for an industry but a snapshot of the year ahead. If you want to know what’s about to happen in the world of video games, Gamescom is the perfect place to look.
