The House of Hope is one of the most interesting segments in Baldur’s Gate 3. Planning a heist in the domain of a devil already sounds pretty cool, until you come across portals to other lands and even the contracts of those enthralled to Raphael. Of course, the big set piece battle against the devil himself, while he sings his own theme song is the cherry on top.

Amidst the heisting and demon fighting is a strange little character called Hope. We don’t really know a lot about her, except that she has a certain authority over the House of Hope, despite Raphael being the de facto lord of the house, and her sister Korilla is in service to the demon. However, one fan theory may have shed some more light on who Hope really is.

Hope May Have Been A Monk Of Lathander In Baldur’s Gate 3

The rather long theory, proposed by FusRoGah on Reddit, starts off by acknowledging that Hope is a cleric when we meet her, but we never learn who her deity is. There’s also the question of the House of Hope being named after her, or vice-versa, and how Hope came to be subjected to enthrallment under Raphael.

It all started off when FusRoGah came across a bloodied note written by a dying monk in the Githyanki Creche. The note addresses Lathander, and is written in all-capitals, and has a very strange “rambling and repetitive style, and really emphasizes hope”, much like the way Hope speaks to you. They suggest that Hope was this very monk.

But how did she come to be in the House of Hope, under the subjugation of Raphael? That’s where the theory takes a leap to suggest that once the monk reached the Fugue Plane after her death, she refused to pass into Lathander’s domain because she wanted to help Korilla break free from Raphael. Perhaps Lathander created the House of Hope as a pocket of refuge as a reward for Hope not giving up the Light of Lathander. Unfortunately, Raphael gained access to it, and has been torturing Hope ever since.

The theory also pointed out architectural similarities between the House of Hope and Rosymorn Monastery to further emphasize the connection to Lathander. There is still one major hole in this theory, about how a monk became a cleric. They address this by pointing out that the reward Hope gives you, the Gloves of Soul Catching, is a piece of legendary monk gear. So, at some point in her ordeal, Hope could have possibly forsaken Lathander.
