With SUPER ROBOT WARS Y on the horizon, fans are eager to see how this latest entry will shake up a formula that’s been refined over more than three decades. We recently had the opportunity to interview Kota Toma, producer of SUPER ROBOT WARS Y, to discuss what makes this entry special and how the team is working to bring new blood into the franchise. Speaking through a translator, Toma offered fascinating insights into the game’s development philosophy and ambitious goals.

Three Decades of Mecha Mastery

The Super Robot Wars franchise has been a pillar of strategy gaming since 1991, but Toma sees the series as truly coming into its own over the past 34 years. When asked about the series’ evolution, he pointed to two major developments that have defined the franchise’s growth.

“This feature of crossover of different series and different characters being involved in and as well as the enhancement of the battle simulations, these are some of the points that he feels is very much what has evolved in the entire franchise,” the translator explained.

But SUPER ROBOT WARS Y isn’t just about refining old formulas. The game introduces relationship mechanics that weren’t present in earlier titles. “Some of the key features we covered earlier on, such as, for example, growing or, you know, showing affection to your other characters as well. These are some of the key differences that he sees which enhances the game,” Toma noted.

The producer emphasized that while maintaining the core battle experience, the team has worked to “enhance the user experience as well as introduce the assist link feature mode as well, so that you can grow your characters.” Additionally, the inclusion of an auto battle mode ensures the game remains accessible to players of all skill levels.

Following the success of Super Robot Wars 30th, the development team didn’t rest on their laurels. They carefully analyzed player feedback and made targeted improvements for the new entry. The auto battle system received particular attention, with the team working to “make it a more natural gameplay.”

The improvements extend beyond automation features. “They’ve also introduced more visible special skills such as hidden weight as well,” Toma revealed, referring to previously obscure game mechanics that are now more transparent to players.

Opening Doors for Newcomers

One of Super Robot Wars Y’s most ambitious goals is attracting players who have never experienced the series before. Toma’s approach goes far beyond just improving the user interface, though that remains important.

“He really focused on character. So it can make it easier for even new players to choose and recognize different characters,” Toma explained. “So the number of titles, number of crossovers that you can achieve in this game. He has focused on ensuring that you have a variety of choices even for the new players.”

The tactical area select feature represents another major accessibility improvement. “Another thing he has also focused on is the ability for new users to use the tactical area select. By doing so, players are able to choose their favorite characters and also choose the favorite battle scene settings from the beginning, which makes it easier for new players to enjoy and make a decision quite early in the game as well.” For those still intimidated by strategy game complexity, Super Robot Wars Y includes a Super Casual mode “designed for new players to start playing as well.”

Balancing Act: Multiple Universes, One Cohesive Story

Managing crossovers from numerous anime series while maintaining narrative coherence presents unique challenges. How do you give each franchise its due without creating an unwieldy mess of competing storylines?

Toma’s solution focuses on careful curation and original storytelling. “One of the core differentiators that he has really focused on in each of the titles is the different titles that are included in each of the games,” he explained. Rather than simply cramming in as many series as possible, each Super Robot Wars entry carefully selects its roster.

“If you include different game titles, each Super Robot Wars series can create its own original scenario with different battles and also different characters as well,” Toma noted. This approach allows each game to tell its own unique story while honoring the source material.

The Dual Nature of “Y”

The choice of “Y” for the game’s title isn’t arbitrary. It connects directly to the game’s structure, which features two main protagonists: Cross and Forte. “As you know, there are two main protagonists in this game, Cross and Forte. This is also intentional,” Toma revealed.

This dual-protagonist system isn’t just a gameplay gimmick—it’s designed to encourage multiple playthroughs. “The game producer would like to ask all the game users to play using different protagonists. So that you can enjoy different scenarios or maybe different characters and enjoy the game as well,” the translator conveyed.

Staying Fresh After Decades

Some longtime fans have expressed concern that recent Super Robot Wars entries have played things too safe, relying on familiar formulas rather than taking bold creative risks. Toma acknowledged these concerns while defending the series’ approach to innovation.

“So you’re talking overall within the game, multiple features exist. But when you compare three titles before, two titles before, one title before, most of these features haven’t changed so much,” he admitted. However, he emphasized that certain elements must remain constant to preserve the series’ identity.

“First of all, there are two parts to always keep in mind when it comes to Super Robot Wars. Number one, the core aspect of this game really is that you have crossovers and different titles inside the game. The entertainment aspect of it is also the battles, so that will remain the same. That is what defines the Super Robot Wars series.”

The challenge lies in balancing innovation with accessibility. “It would seem like they kept on adding additional features to make the game more engaging and entertaining. But in contrast, that has increased the difficulty and sometimes made it difficult for new players to enter and enjoy this series.”

“As such, specifically for this title, Super Robot Wars, they really introduced assist links to make sure that new players are able to enjoy the series as well,” Toma explained.

Character-Driven Excellence

Perhaps most importantly, Toma emphasized that SUPER ROBOT WARS Y puts character development at the center of its design philosophy. “The choices of the characters that are inside this game. As much as possible, each different chosen robot animation characters, their characters and their uniqueness has been enhanced and expressed in this game title in detail,” said Toma.

This focus on character authenticity extends beyond mere fan service. “They also intend to enhance based on the selected game titles and their characters,” ensuring that each crossover feels meaningful rather than superficial.

With SUPER ROBOT WARS Y, Toma and his team appear to be threading a difficult needle—honoring 34 years of franchise history while creating something genuinely welcoming to newcomers. Whether they’ve succeeded will become clear when players get their hands on the game, but their thoughtful approach to balancing tradition with innovation suggests the series remains in capable hands.
