I guess it wasn’t a driver issue that caused random black screens…..RIP my 4070

  1. I think this might be the first 8pin I’ve ever seen melt honestly was expecting another 12 pin failure

  2. They should have put two of them I think one for a 70 class card is not safe enough

Feel free to mention what power supply you had

Never seen a 4070 melt before, good luck getting things fixed

Sucks that this is becoming such a standard event in the graphic cards now days, my 1080 ti was a workhorse on my old pc for years and never had any issues. Still played nearly everything I could throw at it. Now I have a 30 series card and I dont see myself upgrading it anytime soon. Nothing but nightmare stories and overpriced cards.

I’m just curious what was the brand of cable?

After watching countless 4000 series melted connector videos on here, I think it’s safe to say I’m still getting one 🤣 sorry for your loss man

4070 are low wattage i think you didnt insert the cable fully

220watts cooking an 8pin is rare

The random black screen was because of the HDMI cable for me can’t handle 4K 120fps contents, once I changed it to better cable everything works great, my GPU also had this burned pins and the power cable wasn’t inserted fully but that wasn’t the issue.

In your case I see no problem with your GPU, only the cable from your PSU have problem, but I still don’t think the PSU is the cause of the random black screen, try to change the HDMI /DP cable to better quality cable first and check.

We have identical setups, did yours black screen and then all the fans ramp up to 100%?

Normally it’s the 12vhpwr connectors that melt. Managed to fix mine with $120 in tools, a $15 replacement plug, and a LOT of patience.

All these GPUs require more and more power with every new iteration, yet they still use the same power connectors from decades ago. I don’t understand why they can’t at least beef up the connection on the GPU end.

After I got my 4080 I picked up a 90° metal adapter so that there was absolutely no stress on that plug and I’ve had zero issues. Sorry man, that really really sucks.

  14. my cable was fualty too and it gave black screens aswell but i have never seen a 8 pin melting

Wait… a 4070 that uses a SINGLE 8-pin connector? Yes, the 8-pin PCI-e could deliver up to 150 watts, and the slot itself is 75 watts. On paper, the 4070 has a TDP of 200 watts, but realistically, it could go up to 250+ watts. So, a single 8-pin connector wouldn’t suffice the card needs, and it pulled a lot more amps that the connector is rated.

  16. Great… i have frequent black screen on my ultra wide moniter.. and this has me worried. Cant wait to see if my amd graphics card is dying due to bad cables…

Sorry for your loss OP, very unique case of failure. However, seeing a reoccuring pattern. CableMod + old psu (3 years old or more when you purchased the 4070?) = failure.

  18. I’d say this is most likely user error, 4070 won’t take more than 220W and the 8 pin should take that just fine.

I’m sorry mate. But I want to ask you, what kinda black screens were they? Because I have some, when it’s sitting idle the top like 10% of my screen sometimes flashing black, and it goes away when I move the mouse… Just so I can be extra scared if its similar to yours
