For whatever reason im reminded of that thing where Japanese tourists to Paris get sick and depressed because its just a regular city and not the magical fantasy they’ve built up in their heads

Then square ignored them all and refused to ever make a turn based final fantasy again while expedition does with a compelling story and might win GOTY

I hope the exchange was more SE learning from sandfall.this company is so wildly inconsistent it makes my head spin. They put out one masterpiece for every 5 stinkers I swear.

Love seeing devs share ideas like this with one another. I really hope FF finds its way back to their roots and figures out a great turn-based battle system. It’s obviously possible to make an engaging one

Meeting successful, Square to launch three new NFT, mobile, live service, subscription based, battle Royale, open world, gatcha games.

SE: “so like, turn based games good?”
E33: “when made good”
SE: “I see”

They also visited Kojima, so don’t read too much in to it with Square Enix specifically.
Must’ve been super cool for them, though.

I hope one of the “ideas” they gave SE was “get off your asses and make some more turn based games”

I frankly don’t care if the games are turn based or action or whatever. Square proved that they can make a good non-turn based combat system with FF7Rebirth which is one of my favourite in any game ever. They just need to take FF16’s cinematics and put in a fresh new story with Rebirth inspired combat.
Idk why people act like FF7 Rebirth doesn’t exist when it’s a damn good game and honestly should’ve won over Astro Bot.

It would be cool if they did a collab like chrono trigger but I think the exp33 dev team is small.

This is either very productive or it’s code for they had a massive sweary argument

Semi related, but I think the incredible success of CO has reminded people just how good FFX was in terms of its story telling. The parallels are very clear, it almost felt nostalgic and new at the same time.

The language around these kinds of games has changed but few people acknowledge it. RPGs as we know them are really strategy games. Every game is a role-playing game so that’s redundant. Sports games are role-playing games because you role-play as a real team, manager, or player. These games should be seen as fantasy strategy games, or some sort of strategy game where you aren’t just a pair of eyes in the sky.
RPGs came about because of limitations. You couldn’t animate every single spell in a unique way but you could kind of change small things and announce the damage done. Now we’re at a point where you can actually be way more realistic, and so the old RPG ways have somewhat been abandoned save for some nostalgic games that haven’t shaken up the formula.
But really, older RPGs probably have more in common with modern strategy games than other RPGs. Just because stats are used to build a character doesn’t mean anything; they’re presented in certain ways but all games use stats behind the scenes. Sometimes more obviously. *Call of Duty* has stats for its guns I would imagine but there’s skill involved in shooting. Right now it feels like a lot of RPGs are just shitty action games.

Once again a reminder that Square Enix is still making and publishing a lot of turn based games. They just stopped doing it with their biggest brand.

And I hope Sandfall took ZERO notes from SE, just the other way around. Sandfall just needs to stay the course. They have my money for their next game. It could be a fighting game like MK, which is just not my forte, and I’ll pick it up because their team clearly wants to make a fun game.

Doing a play-through of the original Final Fantasy VII right now and I’ve seen a few moments and things from those early Final Fantasy’s that are clearly inspiring E33. Hell the pacing of E33 and VII’s story are extremely similar with very similar themes. There is the scene between cloud and tifa where cloud talks about never being able to find the right thing to say and finish his sentences with one of the quotes maybe being exactly the same as Gustave and Sophie. Also having three acts or parts with the last part being a final dungeon with optional side quests. In fact the end of each part or Act has some uncanny similarities between both games.

So many dumb gamers who think “games that don’t fit my wants = bad games.”
When really it’s ok if every game isn’t for you.

People need to stop using Expedition 33 to shit on Square Enix. FF7 Rebirth is an amazing game with an amazing combat system. Arguable better than Expedition 33. It’s not like Square has forgot about turn based either with games like Octopath 2.

That’s nice, Square could learn a bit from Sandfall on how to make FF good again.

They really need fire Tetsuya Nomura, they have lost their tastemakers
