With all the attention around the "Stop Killing Games" movement, I've been surprised that Mega Man X DiVE hasn’t come up more often, if at all. I haven't followed every discussion, so maybe I missed it, but if it hasn't been mentioned, it really deserves to be.
Originally a gacha game, Mega Man X DiVE didn’t perform all that well. But instead of shutting it down and abandoning players, Capcom took a different approach: they reworked it into a fully offline game. They made smart, straightforward adjustments like tweaking experience gain and making characters accessible without the gacha mechanics.
Now, the game sits at a "Very Positive" rating on Steam. It’s a solid example of a company respecting its players and doing right by them. Please keep this game in mind for any debate as to if it's possible. It very much is and just takes a little bit of effort.

Thats actually really neet
Wonder if they’ll do the same for TEPPEN as the XDive characters live on in that game. Rico has a few cards and Ico has gotten her first card in the latest set.
As well as Dr Wily and Bass as the first classic Megaman characters.
I’m glad they did this. I didn’t like having to start over but I didn’t have to give up my Fairy Leviathan and Iris forever so I’m happy. I wish Dragalia and Echoes of Mana did this, and so many others. I’d buy them!
Crystal Dynamics’ *Avengers* is another good example. When it shut down, they allowed all the players to keep the cosmetics they bought and made everything else free. You just needed to buy them with the in-game currency you get playing missions.
That’s really cool, credit to Capcom for being willing to pivot.
i always wished that operation omnia had received that treatment.
No, this is a solid example of respecting money.
If the game had done well, do you think they would have changed anything? This is why Stop Killing Games won’t work, even if something actually comes of it. Companies will find new ways to exploit people, or they’ll just find loopholes, like they always do.
If vanilla FF14 had done well, do you think they would have rebuilt the entire game from the ground up? No.
“Vote with your wallet” has been, and will continue to be, the only thing that actually makes any difference.
Just a reminder: you have to buy this separately. No data transfer between live service and offline version. It’s just a standalone game made from gacha game.
Tbh the second i heard it’s now a offline game but with a online mantle i was sold. I still think Phantasy Star Online 1&2 (offline mode) are the best cozy games ever
But… but… i was told that doing this kinda thing was “inordinately expensive”?!
Dragon Quest 10 got an offline treatment.
To be fair, DQX never left Japan so YMMV.
Konami did this with that Castlevania mobile game, but they went and made it exclusive to apple arcade with no signs of it leaving.
A similar case with Cygames’ Little Noah which was built from the assets of a previously delisted mobile freemium (published globally as Battle Champs), albeit with different gameplay reminiscent of Dead Cells. And elsewhere, another mobile freemium Alchemy Stars arranged for a special offline backup version to transfer the players’ progress into (unsurprisingly, the QR-based transfer quickly got custom versions unlocking the whole amassed roster for good measure) – it did lose a fair bit of side functionality, but the main campaign is there to revisit.
