As a kid, one of my friends had Mortal Kombat II on the SEGA Genesis. It was one of the more difficult games I'd played, but it was pretty neat. Even though I'd always been more of a Street Fighter and Tekken guy, I enjoyed this one.

Since there's a Mortal Kombat 1 reboot, hopefully the reboot sequel will be good, but nothing will beat the original Mortal Kombat II. šŸ˜‰

Played this through my childhood and still not find a better version. Now I’m sure the new release MK games will eat my computer alive instead of let me play it.

  2. Definitely a huge upgrade over MK1 with a good selection of characters.

Kintaro was probably the one boss who kicked my ass the most of the 16 bit era

  3. I played bloodless mk1 on snes from launch day, everyday until this one came out. What an incredible port it was and so great to be able to do all of the friendships and fatalities without needed to pump in so many quarters lol

I played this so much and you had to be sooo fast and precise on the buttons that the cheat codes forever stayed with me. My whole life during loading screens for any game, my thumb lightly hovered across the d-pad:

down up right up left select – more hp

up up left up down select – more fatality time

I had my print outs from gamewinners that told me how to do all the moves. Great times. We weren’t super well off so we played a lot of the games we had. Rented a lot at blockbuster and rogers too, I guess. I still remember how to do some fatalities and moves, too. Crazy.

  5. The hype I had around the launch of this game was insane. I can’t wait for the new collection to drop on steam. It comes with the making of and history of MK.

OP this isn’t really important, but since you brought it up — Mortal Kombat 1 was not actually a reboot. Mortal Kombat 9 was a reboot, and kind of retold the story of the first 3 games. Mortal Kombat X, 11, and 1 are all a continuation of that story.

Mortal Kombat 1 really only has that name because of marketing. They wanted to make it seem like it was a good time for people to jump back into the franchise. They do a pretty good job of making sure new players can understand what’s going on, but it is still very much a continuation of the events of the previous 3 games, and relies on those events for its plot.

They should bring back this type of marketing for the laughs.

Could you imagine the next Battlefield comes out and the tagline is just: “Call of Duty? More like Call of DOOKIE buy our game instead!”

  8. Played the hell out of this on Game Gear. Such good memories, so many batteries.

MKII had one of the quietest arcade releases ever. I remember going into an arcade one day…and it was just there. I was like hey, MK looks different…wait, whoa. I bought an EGM and they had a special feature about it in the back, which was clearly them discovering it right before print and hastily putting something together.

In retrospect the gameplay…meh, sure, but MKII had some of the best sound design.

My lone ā€œGigachadā€ moment came with MK2.

In the arcades, you couldn’t perform a babality or friendship unless you won the final round without blocking or using the punch buttons (so no projectiles either). While playing with Liu Kang I went for it on the final round and beat the guy I was playing, and I don’t think he realized what I was doing until fatality time…. And the disco ball drops down.

He slunk off, head lowered in shame, while I shimmied a little to the synth music. The only time I owned someone to that degree.

lol that was bold. Street Fighter is def the GOAT. But no doubt these early make were really nice tooĀ

Tbf, Street Fighter Alpha 3 > Mortal Kombat II

That being said i had great time playing Mortal Kombat II on Amiga 1200 when i was a young kid

Mortal Kombat 1 (the latest) isn’t really a reboot. Like, sure, it sort of resets the story, but it’s still a continuation.

I miss when marketing went at each other like this in magazines and comic books. Nintendo and Sega, sonic and Mario, mk and sf. It was fun being fans of this stuff and having respectful shit talking sessions on the playground.

I’ll do you one better. Street Fighter Why?

  16. Efficient-Whereas255

I remember learning every single finishing move in this game when i was like 9. Same with Street Fighter II. Those were peak 90s times. I borrowed the Mortal Combat CD from the library lol.

I remember being 7 years old and my mom bought me this for my SNES not knowing about the esrb rating. lol I thought it was so cool the cartridge was black.

I had the Amiga versions of both SFII and MKII… neither were great, but SFII was totally phoned in by US Gold. MKII though? Probe pushed the A500 to its limit, and removed nothing they didn’t have to, I don’t think they could have any better in hindsight. So maybe in that one instance we can really say Street Fighter WHO?

  19. ISpewVitriol

Honestly though, MK2 was an incredible console port to both SNES and Genesis. The teams behind those ports did a fantastic job. I never played the portable versions.

  20. MrNixxxoN

I used to play both. Quite different games, apples and oranges, I dont think you can directly compare them

Street Fighter is kinda realistic fighting (KINDA) with some fantasy stuff.

Mortal Kombat is just total fantasy fighting with deadly weapons, deadly magic, and gore stuff.

  21. One of the very few games a young preteen or early teen me bought at full price (SNES). I still remember I had to get a piece of paper from the display and bring it to this side counter in Toys R Us. I want to say it was at least $60 back then, no small purchase on what little money I got back then.

  22. XsStreamMonsterX

The thing is, it did have a legit claim to being “the best home version to date.” MK2 was up against Super SF2, and in a weird twist, the SNES version of the latter was actually the censored one this time.

  23. AnnArchist

MK2/trilogy and Street fight 2 are still the goat fighting games.

Who was this “Videogames” they we quoting?
