So has this been tested? I don’t know if I believe what was printed here because there was all kinds of hokey shit in stuff like this, and my household had every issue of Nintendo Power back in the day. 99% of it was solid, though!
LordRael013
So that’s where it came from. The version I heard was down b until it stops shaking. I still do it out of habit.
Octoborne
Wait, yall were pressing B instead of A?
MaterialDefender1032
We look back on theories and speculation like this and laugh, but to this day it still spreads like wildfire and cements in players’ minds… I’m playing Elden Ring: Nightreign right now and even 6 weeks after release, the subreddit is having to quash misinformation.
Disco-BoBo
I had it half right as a kid I thought you just started holding B after the second wiggle
AyyP302
Oh shit that’s real? I always did it, with the extra steps of pressing up and down as the ball flew towards the mon. But as I got older I assumed it was a rumor/superstition of the game.
Gravemind93
So that’s where it probably came from. Huh.
And also no, people, it doesn’t work. As someone else said, the games have been data-mined to death so if something like this worked it would’ve been broadcast in Times Square.
Weird_Ad_2404
You fools. The trick is to put your left pinky finger on the right side of your nose, while whistling the national anthem of Japan.
SubonicXP
Back in the day magazines had a lot of unreliable information.
Killerbudds
no see if you time it when it wiggles left and you hit the dpad left and then wiggles right with dpad right and then left again. You 100% get the pokemon, but if your to slow it escapes
JimmyNewcleus
I always used to think you had to tap B as fast as humanly possible.
gigaswardblade
So it WAS gaslighting
OnetwenT7
I always did a little a b a b a b a as the ball flew out!
…I still do.
Low-Voice-887
Now wait just a dang moment you mean that wasn’t just a stress response??
ExNist
Mash B and match the D-Pad to the way the ball shakes to ensure best chances.
I started doing in in Red and will never stop.
ComradeOb
I always remembered it being B and left right until it stopped moving. I also still do it out of habit.
walmartbonerpills
I always figured it was slowing it down at a system level because Pokemon uses input interrupts vs polling the buttons.
kazamasta31
lol when I was a kid I used to press B when the ball closes and press the dpad in the direction it shakes. If I don’t catch it I just assumed my reaction speed wasn’t fast enough.
Portlander_in_Texas
i just spammed A and my little adolescent brain thought that made it work.
bobclaws
Down B.
42Rocket
So how do you explain me not holding the button and my catch rate deciliter almost 75% but holding the button that threw the ball catch rate be up 85%. To this day with Violet. It might be all in our heads.
Quantum physics says it all in our head and not all at the same time and they know a little about nothing at all. You don’t have to press b. But b imma be pressing it when I really wanna catch that Pokémon.
Eltwish
I doubt there was any single important source of this rumor. I’m pretty sure thousands of us just independently did this on our own accord. It’s a very natural impulse to try to do *something* to influence the outcome. Like, the first few days I played Animal Crossing I mashed A after snagging a fish, thinking that I was increasing my catching odds. I don’t remember how I learned that I didn’t have to do anything, but nothing ever explicitly told me to do that or not do that.
FowlZone
i heard it on the playground during recess so it was definitely true
Sonicvolcano
Ah yes, and then you could catch Mew under the truck.
2ByteTheDecker
No no no you didn’t hold down B, you pressed it on rhythm with the pokeball shaking
Scroty-McBoogerbawls
I always thought you held down, then the direction opposite the shake in time with the shake. Almost like a fishing game.
comicmac305
I mashed it,wasn’t sure if it ever truly worked but in my adolescent mind it made a difference
Jon_Mace
I have been holing down B since 1999
BongWaterRamen
Damn I can smell this picture in a weird way. I swear Nintendo power used like a more pungent ink or something
Numbah8
OMG this wasn’t complete school yard stories? I remember kids sharing this info and it never seemed to work for me. I eventually figured out it was fake but I had no idea it had an origin in actual strategy guides.
Necronoxious
I still do it 😂
techsupportgal
I mash as soon as I throw the ball. It’s ingrained into my DNA at this point, LOL
Rogukast1177
Nobody can tell me holding left+down and b+a didn’t do something
SpongeJeigh
One time I cought a legendary lvl 70 in about 3 minutes. I felt cheated of the challenge. I the. Spent 3 hrs attempting to catch it again with 25 Ultra Balls and 6 pokemon below Lv 60. I regretted not taking the W the first time
justahyuman85
Yup… LOT of misinformation about the games back then, heh. Couldn’t even trust Nintendo sometimes. Easy catch… ha ha… yeah, no such thing if you were in the Safari Zone trying to catch Chansey. Which, btw… had almost a 100% guarantee flee rate due to miscoding.
n0stalgiapunk
Really? I remember holding down+b or something. I reset mewtwo like 5 times as a kid to catch him full health with a pokeball.
Was so long ago that my child brain was positive it worked. Got a gameshark soon after & had unlimited masterballs–so never thought of it again.
AScruffyHamster
Shit, I still hold B and swirl the joystick rapidly. I know it doesn’t make a difference, but it feels like it should. Ben doing that since Red/Blue and even now on Arceus
D34TH-S7ALK3R
Good to know that others believed in pressing buttons affected catching 😂
Z_Paw
“If you hold it just as the ball explodes and then release it after you see the ball wobble a second time”?
If the pokeball explodes, I lost my chances at catching it.
Lachimanus
I played through red and blue like 5 times at least and every time catched MewTwo at full health with a normal Pokeball.
There is definitely something weird on the mechanics.
Serier_Rialis
Hold B and mash down right? Right guys!
dafunkiedood
This MF has the sacred texts
Saybl
Nuh uh you need to not press anything because buttons mess with the capture fr fr
MysticalMystic256
I feel like they should sneakily add this feature in the next pokemon game / gen 10 without telling us
Naroyto
We all know this is wrong. The tried and true method is throwing the handheld across the room as soon as you select to use any pokeball. 60% of the time, works every time.

I swear by mashing b and circling the d-pad
I still mash B to this day
