WD/SanDisk deny refund upon return of unopened 4TB SN850X NVMe drive : r/pcmasterrace

————————————————————-

Update July 15:

I submitted my case to my credit card company back in March (like various people recommended in the comments on my original post). The credit card company reviewed my dispute claim and fairly quickly gave me a refund.

However, the credit card company did say that the merchant (SanDisk) could still provide evidence to support their denial of the refund. I knew at that point that they would, because I had seen this happen to other people in other circumstances. In most cases, the merchant has the upper hand and the last word.

So lo and behold, my credit card company did get evidence from SanDisk and quickly sided with SanDisk and charged me back. This happened in April and I just found out today as I was reconciling my account. I should have done so sooner, but I honestly thought it would take longer to get charged again.

This is what the message from the credit card company said:

Business Name: WWW.SANDISK.COM

Transaction Amount: $510.49

Transaction Date: February 28, 2025

We've rebilled the charge you disputed with WWW.SANDISK.COM.

Here's what happened: We reached out to the business about the $510.49 charge you disputed. After reviewing their explanation, we've determined that you're responsible for the amount in question.

We contacted the merchant regarding your inquiry and the merchant has provided us with the documentation which have been enclosed for your review. Please be advised we have removed the information not pertaining to the case from the supports. The merchant has provided us with explanation which states that upon inspection, one of the drives had the labels missing and as per the return policy, if a returned product is suspected of being fraudulent or counterfeit, SanDisk can refuse and confiscate the product. Since the label is missing, they are unable to verify if the product sent back is the correct one and not a counterfeit.

Here's what to expect: We've rebilled this charge to your account, and you'll see it reflected on your next billing statement. We've also attached further documentation, so you'll have all the details. If you have any new information that may change the outcome of this dispute, please contact us within 30 days.

This is the pages on the PDF in the credit card company's message to me. This is what SanDisk provided to the credit card company:

The sent a lower quality image (perhaps due to the conversion to PDF) of the bogus photos they had sent me.

SanDisk can commit fraud and get away with it.

That is such a joke. I will never, ever buy a product from Sandisk directly.

  2. The fuck did they time travel back to 1870 for those pictures? What a garbage policy. I’ll never buy from Sandisk again knowing that removing a basic sticker makes them accuse you of fraud lmfao. Also, I’d close your account with that credit card company. To not even give you a second chance to respond before charging you is fucked. They don’t deserve your business.

Dang, sorry you had such terrible experience.
I’ll definitely be avoiding SanDisk as much as possible.

File a complaint with the CFPB, they got capital one to side with me on a legitimate chargeback after initially reversing it and charging me again. Not sure if they’ll still be of much help after being gutted but worth a shot. Can also file a complaint with BBB, it’s like Yelp for old people but businesses will still respond occasionally.

  5. Damn. I had $700+ worth of drives in my cart too. Samsung it is!

  6. So the boxes were returned sealed with no labels removed? If so maybe contact GamersNexus? Based on other threads also seems there is a pattern with SamDisk emerging?

  7. I’m upvoting for visibility. Maybe Sandisk or WD has a customer service rep crawling social media that can be summoned to help you out.

you need to challenge cc company.

i had wd do same bs on a hdd that failed right out of the box.

claim it was stolen or fake. they said they would keep item and nothing else.

i then told them i can get the video of me buying this at walmart, me getting out of my car and walking into house video footage. both time stamp, also how they worded it was 100% illegal and was commiting both mail fraud and multiple state fraud ( cross multi state boarder).

after i mention that(summary this thru) they then refuse to fix it but was legal req by law to send me the product back. a week later i know multi walmart people across my state. wd did a recall on said product and it was require to be sent back to wd and none of the item could be sold. all where taken off store selves same day across the usa.

If you can get American Express, do so. They have your back.

Will be avoiding sandisk/wd in the future. Sorry this happened to you. We buy a shit ton of wd/SanDisk products at work. Will be switching to someone more reliable.

Companies lately are being so anti consumer lately it’s frightening.

Western Digital has exited the SSD business, so I am not surprised no one wants to be left holding the bag. Still, I’m sad to see this as I have a number of sn 850x drives in my pc I purchased from SanDisk.

Screw sandisk. Which credit card company? Would like to avoid them too.

  13. Meatslinger

Well, that takes SanDisk off my list of suppliers.

And, since I have some sway with my company—I’m one of the people responsible for vetting technology before we’re allowed to acquire it in bulk, meaning we literally will not buy a product unless I’ve filed a formal recommendation for it—I’ll add a special note in my recommendations saying that we should not be counting on SanDisk for storage solutions unless they can rectify this and demonstrate they’re not actively scamming their customers and then fighting to keep the money. We can make better business decisions.

  14. Honestly I didn’t like buying SanDisk or WD before. But I think that is enough. Now I just won’t buy it recommend either of those

This is what happens when the FTC is gutted and stuffed with clown confetti.

  16. Cute_Ad4654

I’d find a better CC company. I’ve never had mine side with a merchant.

  17. rickybambicky

I don’t understand the problem though. Is there some law in your country that companies HAVE to honour a refund in situations where you’ve changed your mind? If it was faulty or defective it should be enforced, but the way I see it, SanDisk is under no obligation to accept it.

  18. I can relate. I RMA’d a 512 GB Sandisk Mico SD card. That was DOA . They received it but never sent it back to me. I forgot about it for a while. Then, I tried to email their customer support. But I had already deleted the email with the RMA #. I forgot about it again, then eventually just called it a loss. Other to experience, never buying a Sandisk SD card again.
