Destiny 2 lead admits the MMO is terrible at onboarding new players after deleting the first third of the game

  1. What a surprise. Maybe they should take a few steps back and work on making that content playable again.

  2. wow really? removing 4 expansions worth of story can make it confusing for new players? shocker.

  3. That’s the only reason why I didn’t get into the game. Somehow restoring that original campaign would instantly convince me to give the game a fair chance, as I did enjoy the first game back in the day.

  4. Goupilverse

I tried coming back to it, it immediately sent me into a forced story chapter I needed to complete to reach the rest.

Problem? Every mon was higher level than me to the point of one shotting me…

  5. briareus08

    No shit 🙄

It’s clear that these guys care about live service profits only, fuck the story, continuity etc. It’s a shame because the engine and gunplay etc is top tier, but the creativity is just *sad trumpet noises*.

  6. First third? I’d say it’s closer to half at this point

  7. Malabingo

I once tried TES ESO out and if you are new it launched you into the latest expansion as a new player which is a nice idea, but I wanted to start at the beginning 😀

Later they added a patch that allowed starting in the main game though.

But cutting content is an awfully idea…

I never played it that much, but what was the reception of the WoW update that changed up the main world a bit? Iirc it just modernized the old content but nothing was cut iirc?

  8. Really makes you wonder how these kinds of decisions even happen, when 100% of your player base and even non players tell you that it is a stupid idea to begin with.

  9. tinytom08

More than half of the game is gone. Seasonal missions integral to the story, the whole original game, multiple expansions. Gone.

  10. jBalls902

I can’t play the original Destiny 2 campaign that I paid for on release day. Load of shit.

  11. OokamiTheRonin

Ya think? Genius dev is genius. Maybe don’t remove huge chunks of game and screw over the new player experience. I finally imported my Destiny 1 character when they added the expansions to game pass, starting me in endgame content was confusing as hell. Don’t get me wrong, that’s a nice option to have, AFTER a player has already experienced the story at least once. Bungie really screwed everything up.

  12. ArcNeon28

Not surprised. When I first played for a little while, my D2 friends had to give me a 5 hour course over game systems and mechanics for NON-RAID content. That was 4 years ago.

Imagine how bad it would be now.

  13. I_T_Gamer

Cycling out paid content, far too aggressive monetization(IMO), just a floundering mess of what it once was. So sad to see greed gobble up good games…

GL Bungo, I truly do hope for a return to form…

  14. Kinetic_Symphony

Wait, why did they delete existing content? What possible rationale could have lead them to that decision?

Even assuming the standard greedy corporation line… how does that make them more money?

  15. McFigroll

i was a big destiny 1 player but after they basically reset everything for D2 release i lost all my enthusiasm to keep playing.

  16. Terror-Reaper

I was good at OFFLOADING players after deleting the first 1/3 of the game tho!

  17. wisperingdeth

Tried it as a new character last year and was immediately puzzled as to what I’m supposed to be doing, and where the great beginning first hours disappeared to. Stopped playing again. Way to alienate new players Bungie.

  18. UltraNoahXV

First third AND more stuff getting vaulted/removed in todays expansion update such as weapon missions

    Pain

  19. Stopped playing ages ago, I’m not rewarding a company with my money when they remove content from the game.

Bungie are a shit show of a company and on their last legs imo and I cannot believe that Sony paid $3.7 BILLION !!! for them…. has to be one of the worst studio purchases in gaming history.

  20. I was a player from the very start and played the first few expansions. I go back from time to time just to play some limited time events or crucible…but even I’m confused. It’s just menus on menus on menus now. And I have no idea what the story is with half the locations.

  21. raisedbytides

“Today’s top story: removing 30% of a game is bad for new players, also the sky is blue, more at 11.”

  22. Not only that, but the last third of each story expansion is also missing and locked away too.

My friend and I tried to get back in Destiny 2 and we got half way through one expansion and the story just ended. Then The next expansion started and gave us a recap of all this stuff that didn’t happen in the previous expansion.

Imagine seeing trailers for Destiny 2, buying the game, and then getting a completely different game with the vast majority of the story missing. It’s like starting a show on season 4 and having no idea what’s going on.

  23. lungshenli

Yup. For the past years me and my buddy get into the same situation over and over.
We finish a game, look for a new one.
One of us says „shame Destiny 2 is unplayable for newbies“ and choose something else.
    Its ridiculous

  24. TSS_Firstbite

About time they admitted it. Tried to get several friends into the game and at points, got as confused as them with over 1k hours of experience

  25. Terrible_Donkey_8290

Yeah I played a bit of destiny 2 back in the day but I also all interest coming back when they fucking deleted all the explanations I owned

  26. So tossing people into a scenario that had no leadup to kill a personage you’ve no idea about while being assisted by characters you’ve never met was a bad idea? Colour me shocked.

  27. JustsoIcanGore

This is why I stopped after D1. The whole allure of Destiny, atleast for me was the promise of a long journey where we could take our guardian from the beginning of D1 to where ever the game ended down the line.. then they started vaulting or just getting rid of content, then D2 came out and it was a whole separate game with different mechanics and feel and I just lost interest right away.

  28. WineOptics

I was there from the start of the first game. I was all in. Can’t count the hours and moments of joy I had. destiny 2, same shit.. But slowly I just felt everything became less and less fun, less engaging. *Then* when they removed older content I had paid for, I was out.
I have not been back since.

They ruined an absolute gem of a game with a superb community.

  29. Synamyn_Dyxon

After paying $100 for the deluxe edition, only for them to remove both included DLCs, release another DLC that “fixed the gameplay and balance”, and then make the game FREE… They aren’t good at keeping the loyal fans who enjoyed the first Destiny. They dumbed down the build paths and treated it like they were innovating by removing options; almost like Apple selling newer phones with fewer features. The whole game just came off like a greedy grift.

  30. Marcysdad

The best game I’ve played but would never recommend to anyone

  31. They also focused on making money instead of making it good and ended up failing at both, not a coincidence Bungie had a big round of layoffs last year.

  32. MaybeUNeedAPoo

Most of the people I played with regularly left when they did it. Absolutely moronic move. Guaranteed it was done for reasons relating to the copyright suit.

  33. DamianKilsby

The reason why I haven’t gotten bakc in to destiny is literally written in the title, who would have thought erasing the first part of your game from existence would be a bad move.

  34. UnsettllingDwarf

We keep deleting content and we just can’t seem to figure out why it’s so confusing to play as a new player.

  35. I bought this game maybe 2 years ago to play with my nephew, I think it was something with the witch. So I bought the biggest current version of it for like $99 or something. I had been playing Wow and if you buy the previous expansion you get all previous content from every expansion up to that point and if you buy the current one you get all the previous ones and the current one.

Well get into destiny 2 and there are planets all over the place that I can’t go to that I have to buy ANOTHER expansion for it, and its PREVIOUS content. But then my nephew tells me that’s where you can get the best gear before raiding. Is in the PREVIOUS expansion planet. WTF is that shit. So I logged out wrote a massive review and never played again.

Also the store quests I had no idea what the fuck they were talking about, everyone just looks the same or has the same type of names. I’m not that much of a story guy buy holy hell.

  36. elementality883

I bought the game at launch, had loads of fun with friends all the way up to Curse of Osiris. Friend group all moved on in life and we dropped out the game.

One day a year or so ago, I figured I’d run around solo for a bit to see if it would be and option for a new friend group, but found out that EVERYTHING was gone…..only a husk of the game remained that only kept pushing me to buy more xpacs to be able to do anything. Unistalled and never looked back.

  37. gildedbluetrout

If you think of it as an evolving shared world sci-fi shooter game with a continuing narrative that reached its arc conclusion in the final shape, then that game is **completely fucking broken** because bungie deleted the first third of the story. Thats the bottom line. Destiny 2 is irretrievably fucked from a new player perspective. They’re *never getting new players* at this point. And the old players are tapping out. So. Mmm.

  38. TkachukMitts

Bungie has handled the entire Destiny series in a strange way. The first game launched in a terrible state and it felt like half the actual single player content was missing.

  39. hearnia_2k

Not to mention they removed the best part of the game. The first 2/3 campaigns were so much more fun, and presented in a much better way than anything I saw (though I stopped about 2 years ago).

They also removed flashpoints, which had the mini adventures that were fun, repeatable, and nice bite size story bits.

They’ve forced grinding stuff even more. And made it more complex to setup our characters by having the new class specific elemtns being overly configrable.

  40. Kyloyoshi

Not only that, terrible at onboarding old players who went and played other things, too.

  41. DifficultMinute

I quit about the 4th or 5th time I logged in, and it jumped me right into the start of a new campaign.

The first couple of times I was really confused. “That’s not the quest I was on?”, and when it kept happening I got annoyed and deleted the game.

Just… let me do the quest I started, and don’t make me have to go hunting for it the next time I play.

  42. “But we reskinned guns after taking away the god-rolls you farmed for and then hid them behind the season pass task, what do you mean people don’t like that??”

    RIP Black Armory god-rolls

  43. misterxboxnj

I tried the game once and couldn’t navigate the menu and had no idea how to get into a game. Turned it off and deleted it from my memory.

  44. finalfinally

Yeah I tried to get into Destiny 2 a couple months ago and was absolutely lost. Everything about it seemed right up my alley after I enjoyed the first one but I couldn’t get immersed because I had no clue who anyone was or what was going on.

  45. Saying Destiny is a MMO is like saying Destiny is great game for new players.

These guys don’t know what a MMO is or know how to make a good game
