Why was 2018 such a banger year for games?

Be careful, Reddit doesn’t like when you claim an Ubisoft game is good

It was pre pandemic. The world really got fucked hard a few years later and the gaming industry has never really truly recovered

Sometimes I forget that Among Us came out like 2 or 3 years before it became popular.

Industry lost money and then sold their soul to esg score of blackrock….

Because they hadn’t had enough development time to try and fuck up live service games yet.

  6. I mean I’d really only point at 3 games there I’d like. subnautica an indie that took a while to fully update and fix its issues. hades which also needed a lot of patching and updating and kcd which likewise needed a lot of patching and mods of all stuff.

Also three games from different genres that I’d like and not all might even like.. is pretty low for sn entire year.

Someone mentioned become human that one had its own issues but was solid for most of it too.

to get to a lot of games of high quality for a year you have to really go much farther back.

You’re cheating a bit with hades. I’m guessing that was the early access launch, but the real release date was in 2020.

Eh, I’d say 2015, 2017 are very strong contenders for the 2015-2020 time period. Best gaming year of all time is 2008.

Just reinstalled odyssey again my favorite game just blows my mind how beautiful the game is and now playing on a super ultra wide

All those games were left to properly cook before release. Crazy that “good” Ps4 games weren’t really coming out until the tail-end of its life cycle. Ps5 comes nearly 3 years later and nothing on it feels PS5-ish the way these feels Ps4-ish.

Nintendo’s 2018 was full of Wii U ports and lesser 3DS games most ignored. Really the only good game they put out that year I still play is Smash Ultimate.

A lot of studios rushed to get their PS3/360 games out by 2012 or 2013 so they could double dip with PS4/XBOne rereleases. The side effect is that all these prestigious studios began development on their next games at the same time, leading to a massive wave of releases in 2017 and 2018.

  13. There were much better years. Heck, 2025 is already better.

  14. If 2018 is considered a “banger” then basically 20/25 years since 2000 are “bangers”.

I see a lot of people praise SubNautica but I’ve never seen videos or anything about. What’s it about?

  16. I still need to play Odyssey but I can’t get it to work on my steam deck 😭

  17. Solid year for sure, RDR2, GOW and Spider-Man all top 3 for me that year. Still haven’t played Odyssey yet but want to, I’m just not used to long games like that as much anymore so not sure when I wanna invest the time into it.

  18. Odyssey (Gold with DLCs) was the last Assassins Creed game that I love (Greek philosophy and mythology)

  19. RDR2 is amazing, but it’s a shame this considered a banger year compared to former years…

Take 2010 for example. Civ 5, fallout new Vegas, COD: BO1, Halo Reach, BF:BC2? I hate being that old guy (even though I’m only 29) but damn, they really don’t make them like they used to.

there were bangers the year before and after as well, why specifically 2018?

    2019:

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Death Stranding, Disco Elysium, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Outer Wilds, Apex Legends and Control

    2017:

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), Persona 5, Horizon Zero Dawn, Nier Automata, Resident Evil 7 Bio Hazard, Destiny 2, Cuphead and GT Sport

  21. Odyssey was bloated and too grindy, they learnt none of the lessons they should have learnt from the previous one. God of War had it’s good points but the node map system and heavier leaning on RPG gameplay, like Odyssey, added to the game bloat. Both of them losing story coherency for runtime. Hades was a surprise and was part of a resurgence in rogue-likes, Among Us came out but did explode for a while. Kingdom Come was the real surprise. Souls like difficulty for the wrong reasons. Why is it so easy to die!

  22. replace Hades with Monster Hunter World and I agree
