Would love to keep using the old messengers if they weren’t enshittified or discontinued.

We need a new messaging protocol that’s open and not made by a startup that’s eventually going to struggle with paying investors back. Matrix is kinda close but I have no experience with it.

Back in my day I just hung out in #pinkfloyd and met some amazing people and then one day they were like you are here often enough, here’s operator status.
I have to go take my ibuprofen now, my back hurts

Is it not supposed to be that?

MSN messenger could have ruled the world. Then microsoft had a say on the topic.

Remember when IRC allowed you to have 20 people in one voice channel and had real time screen sharing?

IRC is still the GOAT. Nothing comes close to it’s simplicity.
Discord is proprietary and very closed
Matrix is bloated AF (especially with the server side using so much RAM)
I could run an IRC for all of my friends off of a raspberry pi and still have TONS of RAM left over
IRC also has all of the Linux/tech spaces
Zhorvan
A few of the old guys are using that to connect to discord, atleast on our channel.
I moved to disc but if they dont stop pushing nitro and payment crap i’ll move back.

Miss IRC and that whole era of gaming community.
Any mIRC crew here?

That is such a stupid take.
Its like saying TV is the radio of baby boomers or Youtube being the TV of millenials and zoomers.
Completely and utterly r.
lmao what a stupid take. I wouldn’t be surprised if most discord users weren’t even gen z.
Ok? And twitter is Facebook for bigots.
mIRC? Packetnews? For me safer than p2p Back then
Back in the 90s IRC was all we had and we liked it that way.
