E33 turn base is like monster hunter bow/bowgun to 3rd person shooter. Sure it’s technically turn based, but does the enemy really get a turn?
SirBoggle
The kind of game the creators (and corporate*) want to make.
RealSonarS
FF “fans” : God they need to stop chasing trends and make the game they want!! That’s how they make good games not garbage like they have recently
Also FF fans : Guys turn based is the best actually if you look at other successful turn based games this means they should make turn based
BenjyMLewis
Final Fantasy can’t really get back to its roots, because its whole identity as a game series has always been on pushing the cutting edge.
If they can find a way to get “bigger and better” with a turn-based system, then sure. maybe a future mainline entry could be turn-based. But if you want “classic”-style Final Fantasy RPGs by Square, then look towards their smaller releases. Fantasian Neo Dimension, Octopath Traveler, Bravely Default, and the like.
Sionnak
It depends. Rebirth, E33, Metaphor, all great combat systems, all different. FF16 and 15, not so much. It depends on the game and the execution.
The problem is them not even wanting turn based on AAA FF games anymore.
Nyoka_ya_Mpembe
Translation: Yeah we just hired guy from Devil May Cry series to do combat for us, so we are not sure now.
aarontsuru
Jesus fuck. Just make games and make the combat system that makes sense for that game. This isn’t rocket science. If you have a creative turn-based idea, use it. If you have a cool action combat idea, use that. Just make sure it makes sense for the game.
Turbulent-Advisor627
YoshiP should stick to FF14 ngl
crackofdawn
I haven’t enjoyed a final fantasy game since they were turn based. Hope they bring it back
SMC540
It was kind of an awkward question to ask Yoshi-P, because he may not be in charge of any future mainline FF games (aside from FFXIV). So he tries to dodge the question because he doesn’t want to obligate or infer anything that the next director might have to live up to if he does.
Electric-Mountain
They should just do both, because I think the way FF7 Remake did it was perfect
laker-prime
Expedition 33 is easily my GotY, but it’s not just the turn based combat that made it special. JRPG fans have been starving for a more realistic art style over anime, a more mature and serious storyline over the usual cringe, a unique and beautiful world instead of one that’s predictable, good writing, challenging combat, no hand holding….I can go on. It goes against all the modern day tropes and I love the game even more because of that.
I can’t remember the last Square Enix game to provide all of this. Probably hasn’t happened since the PS1 days.
Nanganoid3000
You can make what you want, but if it’s not fun, it’ll be forgotten forever like most games 🙂
Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should 🙂
danondorfcampbell
I’m still hoping they release a version of FF7 Remake that has turn based combat. Doubt it will happen, but a guy can dream.
IfYouDisagreeFukU
He’s saying no final fantasy will not return to turn based because of the success of expedition 33
steamart360
Probably a hot take but I really don’t care about turn based games enough to want FF to go back to that. I enjoyed E33 and persona 3 reload but I wasn’t playing them for the combat.
binge-worthy-gamer
Didn’t you know? If the game is to my liking then it’s the game that the creators wanted to make with an intact creative vision but if I didn’t like the game then it’s because the creators were somehow pressured into pursuing something they didn’t want to make.
It’s simple really.
Even-End1260
I don’t have the link on hand, but when we talked about that one day, a friend told me that one of the reasons FF switched to action-oriented games is because it was always what they actually wanted to do in the first place.
According to what they saw, the turn-based approach was what they _could_ do back in the day, because the technology for action-oriented games like we have today was just… Not there. Not to that caliber at least. So they did turn-based because that’s what they could do with the technical limitations of the time. It just so happened that people fell in love with it. So when technology advanced and they could actually do something like that, FF’s legacy was already well established, and… Yeah.
Feel free to downvote me if this is demonstrably false, I’m ready to take the L on that one. But honestly, I can see it. It’s hardly the first time people fell in love with a game despite not being exactly what the devs intended, and the “true” vision being more polarizing (hello, Doom).
I just don’t understand the need to all the tech-speech in that case tho, but it DOES explain the whole “games that creators want to make”.
ChuckGreenwald
I mean, that’s a legit answer. E33 devs made a game that spoke to them.
moritsunee
Rebirth was such a bloated letdown. It vs E33 is like night and day.
SuperSaiyanIR
Keep and improve rebirth combat just not the 16 combat. I love turn based games but FF has been action longer than it has been turn based at this point. The ATB system in rebirth is imo one of the best combat systems in gaming. It’s not as deep as some turn based games can go but they got the action and satisfying part down.
Prophesy78
I liked FF16, I think the story was better than the combat. I appreciated having a darker, more adult story. However, E33 just hit all the right spots for me.
Narkanin
Bro literally just won’t admit that SE just can’t handle their shit anymore lol. Wah wah wah that remake would take 20 years, blah blah turn based doesn’t work anymore. Cry me a river lol. Meanwhile tiny studios are turning out bangers.
darthmcdarthface
FF7R had the best combat I’ve ever seen in a JRPG precisely because it strayed away from traditional turn based mechanics. I very much prefer that system to what Expedition has which is just boring old turn based gameplay with QTE sprinkled on top.
Daybreakgo
Either way I’d prefer developer to make the game they want. Every Final Fantasy title is different from each other.
FrozenAlien-
I think they should stick with FF Rebirth’s combat system and expand upon it. There’s room for both turn based and real time combat if they want to further evolve the system.
calibur66
Let them make the games they’re passionate about making.
It’s still trend chasing if they just happen to make a game in the trend that you like and trend chasing more often than not results in a worse game. We’ve all spent years begging devs to stop copying the current biggest thing, don’t start doing it now just because the current trend is the one you’re into.
So if they want to make turn based games, that’s fine, if they don’t, also fine, just as long as what they’re making is what they want to make and not what they feel they HAVE to make for the sake of trends and the bottom line.
Beta_Codex
Because it’s not industry standard
There was a reason why E33 is not a triple A game. Turn base games of today never changes its mechanics nor even innovate. It’s still the same for past 2 decades. FF alone never seem to let go of the usual 4–6-man turn base, and Pokémon is still the same as far everyone remembers. Altus Metaphor is literally just a fantasy persona game with a bigger world with no romance bond mechanics. They never changed ever since.
Only E33 was able to deliver and innovate something new. Something current game companies/studios can’t.
bubblegum_cloud
I just want a big, thick, juicy plot. I loved the old school games, yes for the turn based aspect, but because of the lack of cheap side quests.
Side quests were stories in and of themselves before, none of this “go behind this house and kill four mice,” or “a slightly bigger monster is guarding a grave” crap (for the most part).
Between 15 and Rebirth, I find myself spending most of the time doing sidequests instead of the main story that I get bored of the main story because I’m not actively involved in it all the time. And I can’t skip them because a) I lose out on gear and items, b) I lose out on exp which eventually means you fall behind in levels, c) I’m a completionist and WHAT IF big items are locked behind one of these quests.

I’m tired of these conversations posing this question without nuance. As if is only a matter of which one is better, X or Y?
E33 combat is not good simply because is turn based, it’s far from being a traditional turn based combat anyway, and there’s way more to the appeal of the game than how good the combat is.
On the other hand, personal preferences aside, the issues with FF16 combat are way deeper than the style they chose for it, and wouldn’t be fixed if the combat was turn based. Plus… the game has more issues than how bad the combat is, even though some of those issue are connected.
If Square puts out a Final Fantasy with shitty turn based combat, then the narrative will be all smug saying “isn’t that what you wanted?”.
No. There’s because there’s way more to it.

If anything, fix modern FF’s horrible convoluted stories!

I’m playing expedition 33 now half way through. I thought it was going to be the typical beginning slog where you have to build up to the story so I dreaded playing it due to my PTSD from JRPGs. I just could t take it anymore.
I was blown away as the story grabbed my attention. The notes you pickup in game to learn more about the lore I usually skip but with expedition 33 I wanted to learn more.
The conversations with non main quest NPCs I usually skip, but with expedition 33 I wanted to know more.
The combat is based on skill where I can tackle any boss I wanted and it wasn’t based on RNG, but my own ability to counter. I don’t think I can play another turn based RPG after this.
Expedition 33 is more Final Fantasy than Final Fantasy. The quality to life improvements makes it so engaging to play. Te face that saves are recorded for everything you do along being able to respect your skills anytime is a blessing.
Lunarcomplex
Turn based games will always need some skill over knowledge based mechanic for me, but also because it caters to both types of players with is better
CamaroDev
good because Final Fantasy has been going downhill for a long time now.. I think XIV will actually be my Final Fantasy which I already stopped playing after 10 years.
jnighy
I’m gonna be contrary to the sub here and say this is the right answer. There’s no “right path” in gaming. And the lesson from E33 and Baldur’s Gate 3 is definitely NOT “every RPG should be turn based now”. The lesson is to let the devs be the devs. Let them cook what they’re passionate about. Now..I’m not saying this is what Square’s gonna do, but..like I said, I don’t hate this answer
