Imagine how long this would take…

You could live as long as Frieren and it would probably still be downloading

  2. croholdr

My first big download was maybe 1.2 mb and it took 5 hours on AOL and it was a reallly crappy video game. 2400 baud times.

It’s all fun and games until you get to disk 44632 and keep getting a disk read error…

Fun fact: Windows 11 came out 36 years ago
    Time flies

Shouldn’t be like 3200 of them?

  6. hardrivethrutown

I actually kinda want to try it lmao

  7. Chraftor

You will need only several of them to start network install. It is 2025, dude. 🙂

Standard 3.5“ floppy has a max read speed of about 40kilobyte/second.

So you can calculate how long the data transfer will take

You’d hope they would at least have used HD diskettes, if not ED, instead of basic DD.

  10. I had to do three head cleans during install!

download freezes at 45683 of 45686. download corrupted. restart process. corrupt drive. motherboard bricked.

9.3 hours assuming the max read speed of a floppy disk

Not including the time it takes to swap them

…. To what? Get fourty five thousand floppy disks from the car to the house?

  14. Chainmale001

You would pull it out the instant it goes in. Kinda like prom night.

Windows 11 installation media is 5-6 GiB, lets just say 6. Assuming that is a double density double sided disk that’s 1.44MB per disk. It would only take ~4,370 disks to fit all 6 GiBs. Round it up to 5-6000 if the data isn’t distributed uniformly but maintains a 1MB average.

Even if they’re single sided single density disks with 360KB capacity we’re still only going to need 17,477 disks. 20,000 if it’s not distributed uniformly.

At 45,686 disks that would imply an average of only 138KB per disk. Either it’s a very poor use of disk space, or a very weird format for a 3.5 inch disk.

IDk maybe like 57 hours without taking into account swapping out disk or killing mold children in between.

  17. Then by the time the install finishes it needs an update, so you have to get them to mail out another few thousand disks.

  18. my5cworth

Worst part is due to the 1.44MB size limit, you’d have to use ARJ to decompress each disk’s contents before you can even run the install wizard.

  19. stonktraders

50% chances the floppy disks fail and 50% the floppy drive fails

  20. Internal-Buyer-7475

@endermanch on YouTube tried this and gave up pretty soon.

  21. Tobias---Funke

And I thought Monkey island 2 had a lot of discs!!

  22. x33storm

Remembering how often they failed, forever.
