Just took apart my 1080 Ti for the first time, it still had the warranty sticker intact, so it clearly had never been opened. And what do I find? A screw head side up stuck to the heatsink, pressing into the PCB the whole time! I hope MSI's QC has improved!

I cannot be SURE this card has never been opened, but from the state of it and the warranty sticker still being there I am confident it hasn't. The screw doesn't even belong to the card, I couldn't match it to anything. There is a visible dent in the PCB where it has been pressing into it. Still works fine!

I thought I did some crazy shit to GPU's but seems MSI beat me to it long ago!

Pretty clumsy, but it did not hit any traces on the PCB by a milimeter.

Looks like they tried to screw you πŸ˜‚

Seen it a few times; it’s MSI’s calling card along with not covering the VRAM fully

Put it back, it won’t work without the structural thermal pad screw

I’m tired and read that fast thinking you were talking about a Ti-80 calculator and was thinking TIL calculators have a large processor and heat sink!

You got incredibly lucky, well done. Looks to be an empty part of the board, it’s basically pressing into wood (giggidy)

People think MSI stands for MicroStar International but actually it stands for Multiple Serious Issues.

I opened a tuf 5090 recently and the thermal pad sticker job was sloppy as hell too.

Afaik they don’t use that blue stuff on graphics cards. That might be aftermarket thermal pad.

Did it give you more fps?

I bet QC were like β€œwhere the F did that screw go! No time, get another!!

MSI and Gigabyte have some horrible QC when it comes to GPUs. Asus seems to have good QC, but the worst product support/RMA reputation on the market.

Sapphire, XFX, and Colorful seem to have maintained their reputation pretty well. With EVGA gone, it looks like the more reputable GPU board makers are on team Red, ironically.

If I had to pull a guess out of my ass, I’d say that NV’s margins are board makers is shit compared to AMD, so they squeeze out every penny they can.

Which is ironic, because if you get a contract with NV, you’re guaranteed to sell a ton of boards. With AMD/ATI you’re assured to sell less, at least since 2007.

it would have sent you to rma already if it was a 50 series ShitPU

Better make sure to put it back in the correct spot πŸ˜‚

My 6750XT came with broken pins for the rgb connector (not a huge deal, but broken before I even opened the box) mixrocenter wouldn’t do anything and messaging AMD, they said it was my fault after opening it and that they don’t cover personal dmgs πŸ™
The card works completely fine, and i got it on sale, but it’s crazy that it was broken before I touched it and there wasn’t anything I could do about it.
