This is something I wanted him to do a while ago. He has to run naughty dog and all of the boring administrative duties that entails, direct and write a game, oversee the other one they’re working on even if he’s not a director/writer for it, and then on top of that was deeply involved with a TV show. He was spreading himself way too thin.

I see someone wants to make The Last of Us Kart

This will never happen but I’d love a new Jax and Daxter game. However I’m not sure they’d do it right.

    Neil Druckmann:
    >”I’ve made the difficult decision to step away from my creative involvement in The Last of Us on HBO. With work completed on season 2 and before any meaningful work starts on season 3, now is the right time for me to transition my complete focus to Naughty Dog and its future projects, including writing and directing our exciting next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, along with my responsibilities as Studio Head and Head of Creative.

    >Co-creating the show has been a career highlight. It’s been an honor to work alongside Craig Mazin to executive produce, direct and write on the last two seasons. I’m deeply thankful for the thoughtful approach and dedication the talented cast and crew took to adapting The Last of Us Part I and the continued adaptation of The Last of Us Part II.”

Kinda wish it was the opposite and he was leaving to chase his dream of being a Hollywood director.

  6. We are all shocked he isn’t staying to be part of the success of season 3!

  7. Well, killing off Joel was the nail in the coffin in the series

  8. I mean he took a lot of what people didn’t appreciate in the 2nd game because it wasn’t there to help the narrative and turned it up to 11 in the show. Of course he’s gone.

  9. KillTheZombie45

Something tells me HBO got tired of his shit.

  10. Um maybe for the best, hey maybe they should make another remaster for the game!

  11. SloppyMeathole

This is what happens when you double down on bad story ideas and tank a very popular show very quickly.

I can’t believe they were actually dumb enough to follow the game story for season 2. Why did they think people would accept it anymore than they did with the video game? Pedro Pascal was the glue to the show, they should have changed the story and not killed him off. So dumb.

  12. RokkakuPolice

Of course, he writes absolute garbage when he’s not stealing from others.

Druckman is one of the scummiest people in the industry. He’s stepping away because the show is now in the same state as the video game. It’s written into a black hole it clearly can’t recover from. He did this and now wants someone else to clean his crap up.

  14. ZeMadDoktore

Wait, season 2 doesn’t even cover the whole second game?

  15. mountain36

I guess he gonna do a remaster of remaster of The Last of US HD to another remaster for Nintendo Switch 2

The man didn’t even write the first game, gets all the praise for season 1. Now when it comes time to make a tv show over the events Neil wrote, he dips.

  17. ReasonableAdvert

He already wasn’t really that involved with the second season and it showed. Pretty telling that the best episode (the flashback episode) was the only one he directed.

  18. Emotional_Piano_16

aww, looks whose backdoor Hollywood career fell short!

Good. His focus should be on making games. There are very few companies remaining that are still capable of making AAA 3rd person action-adventure games and ND is one of them. Hopefully Rockstar’s Gta6 and Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic delivers.

  20. Either-Band-5652

Given Neil Druckmann’s stance on Israel’s military actions in Palestine, I have no respect for his work.

  21. For all of you unable to accept that there are very valid criticisms of TLOU2, here is a very well written article discussing its pros and cons: https://defector.com/the-last-of-us-part-ii-insists-theres-artistry-in-all-of-its-violence

I have no dog in this fight, but the way some of you treat others for disagreeing is hard to watch. We are all gamers on Reddit — more alike than unlike. Consider showing a bit more courtesy. The world is better with diverse opinions but only if we don’t lash out at any divergence.

  22. RadRhubarb00

Good. I’d rather Intergalactic get the love and care from him than TLOU season 3.

  23. Marlito214

The show will probably be the same abysmal quality it was in Season 2. Neil only has credits on the last two episodes. Craig Mazin is the credited as the writer on all episodes and has sole writing credit on the first 5 episodes of Season 2.

  24. Derpykins666

This was basically going to happen anyway – The show is done after Season 3 because there isn’t any more ‘game’ for them to build a narrative out of. It’s likely going to go through the same woes as the second game did too, which again, makes it kind of hard to see why they wanted this show so bad in the first place. Hopefully S3 is better, but S2 was really meandering and empty after Pedro exits the stage, and I just don’t think Ramsey is a strong enough actor to carry the show on her own. Some of the side characters are pretty well cast, and we still haven’t seen much of Abby, so we’ll see. I imagine S3 will be a huge focus on Abby though. So maybe she’ll do a better-ish job? But S2 kind of took the wind from the sails a bit.

I get the feeling Neil wanted to be like Hideo Kojima and go from gaming to something live action be it movie or tv

but it sounds like he was not cooking the stupid “I’m going to be a mom” is the only thing I’ve heard about season 2 no praise just everyone cringing over that
