Ninja theory staff must be F5ing their gmail a lot today…

  2. BakedGoods

Games been in development for almost 10 years, last news on it from Oct 2024 said it was only now becoming playable. Tons of Rare OGs developing this game. Ouch.

  3. MuptonBossman

Thank God Rare found a hit in Sea of Thieves, otherwise I fear they would’ve been shut down entirely.

  4. susankeane

Thank you Xbox for buying up all the talent so you can squander their ability and then fire them.

  5. AxlIsAShoto

No shit, they have been working on this for 10 years. RARE was already dead.

  6. Sounds like this game had been in development hell for a while. Shame, though, I liked what little they had shown in the past.

  7. No-Mushroom5934

Xbox as a brand has been suffering for a decade plus and actively burning down for the last few years. Their upcoming 3DO strategy isn’t going to help either.

  8. Greenzombie04

Still not sure what this game was suppose to be.

  9. EtheusRook

With us not even seeing a single solitary second of gameplay footage AFAIK. Does anyone even know what kind of game it was?

  10. Iggy_Slayer

It’s kind of not surprising because they announced this game ages ago but then you think and there’s still quite a few games that xbox announced 4+ years ago that are still MIA like perfect dark, state of decay 3, contraband and fable. Hell fable we know was greenlit in mid 2017 and it’s still nowhere near ready to release…we haven’t even seen actual gameplay of it still!

Xbox’s mismanagement of studios in the last 10+ years is something books are going to be written about years from now.

  11. Geeekaaay

While I cannot defend the layoffs at all, having a game stuck in development hell for 10 years is never a good sign….

  12. RainbowDildo8008

Still waiting for this to happen to The Wolf Among Us 2 and Beyond Good and Evil 2…

  13. Tolendario

microsoft buys up companies and then fires everybody, but lets cheer for the great value of gamepass

    /spit

  14. johnny-tiny-tits

Thankfully they weren’t working on the new Perfect Dark, so there’s a chance that still might actually come out.

  15. Yeah having the game stuck in development for 10 plus years is not good. Just shows either it had no clear direction to begin with OR people in charge were told to constantly change direction.

  16. GooseSl4yer2003

Remember when people saw Nintendo’s decision not to acquire Rare, allowing Microsoft to buy them instead, as one of Nintendo’s biggest mistakes?

Fast forward over two decades, and Rare has done barely anything under Microsoft outside of Kinect and Sea of Thieves.

  17. SuperNoFrendo

I just want a sequel to Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Viva pinata, and Conker. Rare sits on some of the best IPS

  18. PsychoNicho

I see Rare and from one abandoned corner of my brain I hear…”Banjo-Three-ie…”

  19. PsychosProphet

Can’t wait for Bethesda being hit with layoffs /s

  20. -LittleRawr-

That sucks. The trailer looked so amazing, I loved everything about it. Guess we’re back to same-old shooter, live-service games and constant sequels. As good as this industry can be, it rarely rewards creativity.

  21. cheesybreadlover

This is a shame. Rare deserves better than Microsoft.

  22. Unplaceable_Accent

That’s right they’ve already bypassed Common and Uncommon, will be hitting Legendary next.

  23. Broxigaro

Perhaps this isn’t the time or place but maybe now something can be done with Banjo-Kazooie? We’ve been waiting 25 years for more of the dynamic duo (not Nuts & Bolts)

  24. Notwhoyouknown

Of course one of those games I was super interested in, just like scalebound, forever lost to the ether.

  25. Isn’t this the game they admitted they didn’t even have a real concept for when it was announced?

  26. Pitiful_Option_108

This reminds me of the game Scalebound. But the difference is the studio wasn’t making two games but one and failed to produce something.

  27. MakaButterfly

Man these major acquisitions haven’t been great for MS

    They actually made it worst

  28. King_Artis

    The layoffs are absolutely terrible

But being in production/development for a decade with nothing to show is also terrible.

Regardless I do hope those affected can find a new opportunity as soon as possible, something even better.

  29. In the perfect timeline, Rare retained staff, and released Perfect Dark II in 2005, a direct sequel that explored the mystery of the Cetans, introduced world building for the Maians who see Joanna as a great hero to their race, and had a more desperate and unpredictable dataDyne corporation-turned-terrorist organization as a major antagonist faction.

    😩

  30. Wonder_Weenis

JFC Rare is the most zombified studio that ever existed.

just let it die in peace

  31. ClubChaos

I hope not – this is one of the Microsoft games I was actually interested in.

  32. Lanky-Budget-4661

They should just release a bad game im sure nobody would complain

  33. SpilledGG

So what I’m reading is now Rare will have more time to focus on games they *know* will sell well, like the next Viva Piñata.

  34. aZombieDictator

Xbox has so much licenses and money yet they still seem fucked.

They really just need to license out properties they own and let other people make stuff.

  35. KillTheZombie45

….welp another rare game bites the dust…

  36. Slaughterfest

Rare hasn’t been allowed to do basically anything cool for almost 20 years outside of Sea of Thieves.

It’s so fucking sad to me, because they legit made half of my favorite childhood games. It frustrates me to no end how much they’ve been completely disrespected as a studio by Microsoft. Ughhhh

  37. They can piss 69 billion up a wall to get COD on gamepass but can’t support these type of games which cost nothing in comparison.

  38. Shattered_Disk4

Xbox bout to put on a blood bath today. This will likely not be the only studio that gets the axe

Maybe they will stop buying every studio under the sun trying to strike gold and finally get a “console selling IP” out of which ever studio they bought that week
