Different history. Implants had already been available for years

  2. Umibozu_CH

Implants already existed in 2023 and before that, what’s the problem?

  3. OneSaltyStoat

He lost his arm even earlier, back in the army. Cyberware wasn’t uncommon during that time. Not nearly as sophisticated as in ’77, but certainly not uncommon.

It’s not irl 2023 plus real prothstetics are pretty advanced

  5. Clyde8_24

It is somewhat explained how the cyberware has improved/changed as the years went by in Night City

Cyberware existed way further back in the Cyberpunk timeline. They diverged hard from our timeline somewhere in the 80s I believe.

Cyberpunk’s world was first written in the 80’s, and the game at that point took place in 2020. So Cyberpunk’s history starts to heavily diverge from our own in the 80’s.

Basically it’s an alternate history. As I recall the original RPG was written in the 80s, and was set in 2013. Not just technology was speculative, but some geopolitics as well.

A bit awkward now, in the year 2025, but I don’t think they can really change the lore now.

The perils of writing about the future, I guess.

I think Mike Pondsmith said that cybernetics were created in the 80s in his version of cyberpunk.

In the cyberpunk universe this tech was around by 2013. A divergent evolution of human’s core tech focus. Much like Fallout did with Nuclear and Analog. Like we do IRL with information transmission.

implants in the cyberpunk universe were a thing for decades prior to 2023, if you have the physical copy of the game, there’s a lil lore booklet that tells the full timeline

Cyberpunk has been around a very long time as a near future sci-fi setting, so that world’s history breaks from real history completely, including technological advancement. It’s based on fiction of the 80s, and the idea of a cyberized corpo-distopia world by 2020 or earlier wasn’t all that odd at the time.

  13. FanSince84

This game’s world history timeline is derived from a TTRPG that first came out in the 80’s. It’s set in an alternate history where cyberware has existed for a very long time. For a very basic overview see: [https://cyberpunk.fandom.com/wiki/Timeline](https://cyberpunk.fandom.com/wiki/Timeline)

Think of Johnny’s arm not so much like the cyberarms in 2077, but more like our current robotic prosthetic arms many of our wounded vets get, but in a grungier more industrial aesthetic.

u/doomslayer3214 were you seriously not paying attention to the flashbacks that were set in 2023? It’s not our 2020s, it’s the 2020s of cyberpunk where everyone was already getting futuristic artificial limbs and implants.

Cyberpunk is not our future. It’s the future of the 80s.

The time line is the same as ours up till around 1990. After that it diverged. Our world is actually more advanced than cyberpunk in some ways (wireless tech and data storage for example) because the events of cyberpunk led to a focus on different technologies. So cybernetic implants were already common by 2013, and significantly more advanced than what we have in the real world now.

I may be remembering this wrong, but we lost on the Japanese front in WW2 in cyberpunk universe. This is the source of the tech boom happening in the 80s for their universe.

wait till you learn that there is the ussr still on the map

  19. Lavatherm

Take a read on cyberpunk history, it’s not RL future it’s and alternate timeline ☺️

  20. SanityRecalled

Alternate history with an alternate timeline of technological progress, similar to how the great war in Fallout was all the way in 2077 but they still hadn’t invented the transistor and therefore never focused on miniaturization like our real world but instead focused on robotics and nuclear power while using vacuum tube technology.

  21. HeavensHellFire

This is the most obvious karma farming post ever.

You’d have to have played the game with your eyes and ears closed to have this question.

  22. Outside_Ad1020

You can literally see in his flashbacks people with mantis claws

  23. TheRayGunCowboy

The Cyberpunk History diverges from our timeline as early as the 80’s if I remember correctly. And it’s not unreasonable to believe they had cybernetics like that by 2023. We have some now… not widely available but they do exist.

  24. Silent_Reavus

Cyberware was prevalent in cyberpunk 2020.

    This isn’t our future.

  25. Did you just ignore the forced flashback from that exact year featuring the giant cyborg that crushed you?

  26. CE0_of_Anxiety

Yeah I had no idea but Cyberpunk 2077 is actually a loose sequel to a “pen and paper RPG” Cyberpunk set in 2020 which was released in the 80s. I guess the people back then imagined that’s the tech we would have by now haha

  27. What is happening to Reddit? How is this post not downvoted to oblivion for low effort?!

The game makes it abundately clear that the Cyberpunk universe is a separate world than our real life.
