Last year, Evo 2024 set multiple records in terms of attendance, and it looks like the fighting game community is breaking some more now.
Ahead of registration closing later tonight, the Evo 2025 organizers revealed that one of their mainstage titles is making history.
The tournament for Marvel vs. Capcom 2 will reportedly be the largest the game has ever seen in its 25 years in the FGC.
They didn’t reveal what the exact entrant numbers for MvC2 were, but we should be learning about them pretty soon.
We also don’t know what the previous record was, however, if we look back at Evo 2009, the game reportedly had just 232 players signed up.

The final Evo registration leaderboard before we get the final results show a few changes in the rankings.
Street Fighter 6 is still unsurprisingly in first place followed by Tekken 8, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, Guilty Gear Strive, and Granblue Fantasy: Versus in the top five.
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 actually moved up a spot from its previous place to sixth ahead of Under Night In-Birth 2 and Mortal Kombat 1 now.

Last year, Evo 2024 managed to set the record for most entrants ever for an eSports event with over 10,000 unique players, so it’ll be interesting to find out what those numbers are like this year.
Moreover, Street Fighter 3: Third Strike also became the largest single tournament for the game ever at Evo 2024 with over 1,000 entrants.
So while they aren’t exactly keeping up with the biggest modern games, the classic Evo titles seem to be consistently bringing in more people than when they were the premier titles of the event in years past.

Evo 2025 is set to take place August 1–3 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
